In what was a well-matched and hard-fought encounter, Sweden and the USA couldn't be separated in an entertaining 0-0 draw.

Jill Ellis dropped Abby Wambach, following their win over Australia, for Morgan Brian, allowing Christen Press to move into her more natural centre-forward position.

For former US coach, Pia Sunhage, it was a case of changing things to make up lost ground after a dramatic draw with Nigeria. Emma Berglund and Kosovare Asllani were replaced by Amanda Ilestedt and Jessica Samuelsson, as the veteran coach looked to correct the insecure back-line.

USA and Sweden looking dangerous on the flanks

The beginning of the game was very tight and tense, as expected. The US had the better openings, although Meghan Rapinoe's dangerous delivery wasn't met by an American head.

Sweden felt that they should have had a penalty midway through the half, and Caroline Seger had every right to appeal. Her snapshot volley screamed towards goal, before it struck Sydney Leroux's arm - Sachiko Yamagishi waved play on, however.

Both teams were exploiting the flanks, as that seemed to be the best way to find a breakthrough. Similarly, the pair opted for the right flank and both Ali Krieger and Sofia Jakobsson were providing their attackers with fantastic crosses.

The first shot on goal came from the American right-back, though Krieger's touch took her wide of goal and the shot was comfortably dealt with by Hedvig Lindahl.

Ellis' side were beginning to force the issue after Sweden's period of dominance, but neither team could capitalise and they went in goalless at the break.

Neither team can find a way through

Lindhal was called into action almost immediately after the restart and tipped Carli Lloyd's effort over the bar.

Therese Sjögran also came close to breaking the deadlock. Her spectacular 30-yard effort had Hope Solo scrambling, as it narrowly went over the bar.

The US then had a penalty appeal of their own turned down for what looked to be a clear-cut handball from Nilla Fischer.

Rapinoe's crossing had been a constant threat for her side, and it took some magnificent defending by Jessica Samuelsson to stop Lloyd from heading home at the back post.

Chances arrive, but still no goals

The Wambach-Rapinoe partnership almost struck gold, minutes after the former came on. Wambach was denied by the excellent Lindahl, before a Lloyd glanced a header over the bar. For all their chances and pressure, it was Sweden who went even closer to breaking the deadlock. Seger's lofted effort beat everyone but Meghan Klingenberg rescued her team with a fantastic clearance.

Neither team could find that elusive winner, and the game ended all-square - despite the late flurry of activity and Alex Morgan's introduction.

The result means that the USA are a point clear of Australia at the top of their group, while Sweden, now on two points, require a win against the Aussies to progress.
