A powerful header from Anthony Modeste was enough to seal a famous win for 1. FC Köln over their bitterest of rivals, Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Plenty of passing, possession but very few chances at either end

The first chance of the game fell to the in-form Billy Goats and Marcel Risse, who was set through on goal by good play from Anthony Modeste. The winger drove towards goal but shot well-over the goal when he really should have hit the target.

Gladbach were dominating possession but failed to turn that into chances, which meant the hosts had the opportunity to hit back on the break. They would have opened the scoring through Leonardo Bittencourt too, had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping from Yann Sommer. The Swiss stopper raced off his line to nick the ball from Bittencourt's toes.

The Foals slowly began to come forward but they were limited to long-range efforts in the main. Mo Dahoud looked assured in midfield and he tested Timo horn from 25 yards, though the goalkeeper gathered easily. Josip Drmic was also trying his best to try and make something happen up top but there was seemingly no support from his team-mates.

Second half sees the Billy Goats take all three points

Even when the visitors broke through in the second half, there always seemed to be a Köln body in the way. A fine move down the left involving Dahoud and Ibrahima Traore involved the latter having a powerful shot brilliantly blocked by the impressive Fredrik Sörensen.

A goal in the game looked to be on the horizon now that Gladbach had open up, and they were probably left wishing that they hadn't bothered going forward. Anthony Modeste was the man to grab the vital derby opener after rising above everyone else to power a header into the bottom corner and past the helpless Sommer, sending the home faithful into rapture.

Horn, as perviously mentioned, was a spectator for the majority of the game and remained so until the very end of the game. Only a few stray few balls and corner kicks were collected by the young goalkeeper, and one final catch sealed the win and Dr. Felix Brych blew for full-time moments later.
