On Wednesday, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim announced that Huub Stevens had stepped down from his role as head coach on medical grounds.

His assistants, Alfred Schreuder and Armin Reutershahn, will take charge of the team for the time being.

A tough decision

After what the club called "increasing discomforts" Stevens sought medical advice from club doctor Thomas Frölich, who performed a cardioversion.

That, combined with further doctor's advice, led him to announce his decision that he would be leaving his position.

The 62-year-old Dutchman then informed the club's board of directors on Wednesday morning that he was unable to continue.

Understandable for all parties

"I am very sorry to be leaving the team and the club at such a difficult and challenging time," said Stevens.

He added, "I think everyone can understand and appreciate the fact that my health and wellbeing takes priority in making my decision."

Directors Peter Görlich and Alexander Rosen were very understanding of his decision.

The former admitted it was "yet another blow to [Hoffenheim's] season", while Rosen said they would have "loved to keep working together on survival in the Bundesliga".

Who'll take over?

28-year-old Julian Nagelsmann, who was confirmed to be taking over at the end of season, could now be accelerated into the role.

He is 11 years younger than Pal Dardai, the youngest coach in the Bundesliga at present, and would be younger than Klaus-Dieter Ochs - the current record holder.

Ochs is the youngest manager in Bundesliga history, who was nearly 31 when he took charge at Hamburger SV.

There are arguments for and against bringing in Nagelsmann now, as he will get a feel for the first-team players and what it's like to manage at the top level.

However, it is massive step given the current state the club are in; Hoffenheim are joint bottom of the Bundesliga. Only time will tell if he gets the job before the summer.
