Bayer Leverkusen and Omer Toprak have both been dealt a major setback ahead of their vital second leg tie against Villarreal, in the Europa League

This comes in the shape of the fourth injury this season for the Turkish International defender.

He picked up the injury during a challenge with Hamburger SV front-man, Pierre-Michel Lasogga.

The injury is set to rule him out for at least three weeks, keeping him out of Leverkusen’s encounters with Villarreal and VfB Stuttgart; the latter of whom they face in the Bundesliga on Sunday

Will Leverkusen cope without their rock at the back?

Luckily enough for Leverkusen, they have great cover at the centre of defence. It is likely that Kyriakos Papadopoulos will partner Jonathan Tah ate centre-half, or even Andre Ramalho. The Brazilian has struggled for playing time this season after making a summer transfer over from RB Salzburg.

However, with Tin Jedvaj suspended for both the Villarreal and Stuttgart game, Leverkusen will be praying for an injury free couple of games - something they have struggled to do all seasonIf not, Roger Schmidt's side will have to look for big performances from some of their youth players, such as Lukas Boeder

How will this affect Leverkusen in their pursuit of Europa League success?

Obviously, losing their best defender and captain will have a considerable effect on the team. Leverkusen will certainly be much more vulnerable at the back without their rock.

However, Tah and Papadopoulos are two players who are more than capable of filling Toprak’s boots. The former has had an emphatic season, and there is no reason as to why he cannot continue his form with Toprak along side him.

After all, Tah has already played a large amount of games without Toprak partnering him this season. Time will tell if Leverkusen will miss their captain, when they play their season defining game against Villarreal this Thursday.
