The hosts probably deserved all three points, although they couldn't take full advantage of Matthias Lehmann's sending off.
First half to forget
Köln could have shocked the home crowd into silence straight off the bat, but an out-swinging corner towards Dominic Maroh was headed just wide by the Slovenian. Tobias Werner replied for the hosts only to see his early effort fly off target also. Neither side, it seemed, were keen to sit back and defend.
Even with both teams coming forward and attempting to force an early opening, the cutting edge was lacking. A long-range effort from Halil Altintop swerved away from goal at the last minute, while Anthony Modeste failed to connect with Filip Mladenovic's near post cross; plenty of endeavour, but quality was not forthcoming.
Unfortunately that was as good as it got in a turgid first period that began with promise. Matthias Lehmann's late yellow card was the only major moment of the half, which said everything anyone needed to know about the first period. Tobais Welz blew the half-time whistle dead on 45 minutes, as the fans made off for some much-needed food.
Billy Goats cling on with 10 men
Peter Stöger opted for one change at the break, in an attempt to break the stalemate, as Milos Jojic replaced Yuya Osako. It would be Augsburg who made the early running, however, and Ragnar Klavan flashed a header over the top from Daniel Baier's corner. The hosts seemed like the side to make the early dash for a goal.
The game had more life to it and the momentum - which was already in Augsburg's favour - swung even more towards the hosts. Lehmann, who had been booked late on in the first half, was given his marching orders after his high boot caught Werner in the head. The midfielder did carry on, but was substituted soon after.
Raul Bobadilla was the replacement and he went close from a free-kick moments after coming on, only to see it flash just wide. Alfred Finnbogason saw a close range shot and then Altintop, who had scored in Wolfsburg, blazed over after a mazy run saw him through on goal.
The game passed by without major incident afterwards, leaving both sides to settle for a point. The visitors move a point closer to Schalke, and to cementing a solid top-half finish. Augsburg are sat on 37 points, seven ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt and six above Werder Bremen. They should be safe, even if it is not mathematically confirmed.
