Hamburger SV have confirmed that they will be retaining the services of 21-year-old defensive midfielder Gideon Jung until 2020, after the player signed an extension on his original deal which was due to expire in 2018.

Hamburg pleased to tie down 'very talented' midfielder

Jung made 20 appearances for Hamburg's first team in the 2015/16 season, and also appeared five times for their reserve side in the Regionalliga Nord at various points across the season. The midfielder has played twice for Die Rothosen so far this season, although he is currently sidelined until September 19 due to an injury to his hip flexor muscles.

Speaking to the club's website, Hamburg chairman Dietmar Beiersdorfer said that the club are "very pleased" to be able to secure the immediate future of a "very talented and viable player" such as Jung.

The player himself also spoke upon signing the contract extension, saying that he was "very pleased about the offer" and that he "did not think twice" about accepting the terms presented to him by Hamburg.

Injury prevents him from joining up with Germany during international break

The promising defensive midfielder, who can also play as a central defender, signed for Hamburg in 2014 from third division outfit Rot-Weiß Oberhausen where he made 22 appearances in his sole season at the club.

Jung was originally due to join up with the Germany U21 squad for their European Championship qualifier against Finland U21s on September 6, however the injury he suffered against FC Ingolstadt on August 27 will prevent him from being involved in the fixture.

Hamburg were held to a 1-1 draw at the Imtech Arena by Ingolstadt in their opening game of the new Bundesliga season, with Jung completing 66 minutes of the match before succumbing to the injury which will now rule him out for the next two matches.
