Atletico Madrid are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. They did this after neither them nor PSV were able to score in 210 minutes of football. This meant the two clubs had to endure a stressful penalty shootout. It took eight rounds before Juanfran finally slotted home the winning penalty.
This was a big night, not only for the club, but also for Juanfran. This was the first penalty for Atleti and he showed no nerves sending his side through to the next round.
Atleti advances on penalties
Antoine Griezmann stepped up first for the hosts. He waited for to commit to diving to his right before firing his effort into the bottom left corner. Jeroen Zoet came close to stopping Gabi's shot from twelve yard but the ball managed to squeak past. Saul should count his lucky stars tonight after his penalty effort. He hit it towards the right, and Zoet dove that way. The PSV goalkeeper got both hands on the ball, but somehow, it still fell into the net.
Fernando Torres powered one into the net before Jose Gimenez got one in behind Zoet. Filipe Luis then stepped up to the spot, stuttered in his run up before placing his shot into the bottom right. After Luciano Nasringh's miss off the crossbar, Juanfran ended the night for good.
Hosts start out stronger
PSV knew their back line was going to get tested all night and in just the second minute, Zoet got put to the test. Antoine Griezmann almost slipped Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco through. But the young Dutch goalkeeper was quick off his line to thwart any potential danger. The Frenchman was so influential during the opening 45 minutes as the creator for Atleti. Four minutes later, Griezmann tried to square a ball to Carrasco although the angle of his pass was just a bit off.
There was finally a shot in the 15th minute. Juanfran waited for the overlap of Koke down the right side of the pitch. Once Koke received the ball, he played an inch-perfect pass to the feet of Griezmann. The former Real Sociedad man took his time before firing his shot into the hands of Zoet.
Atletico were growing in confidence as the half wore on. Diego Simeone showed it through is emotion on the touchline. Inside the Calderon, the supporters sensed the confidence increase as the noise grew.
Diego Godin then had a couple of the best chances in the half off of set pieces. His first came in the 17th minute when his header soared a bit too high over the cross bar. Then, 14 minutes later, his header got stopped as it was heading towards the top right corner.
PSV defense holds steady in second half
Atletico coming out with a bit of an edge in the second half as they searched for a winner. The first chance of the second half fell to the hosts. Giménez rose to meet a cross off a corner but could not direct his header on target.
Despite the defensive formation of PSV, they came close to finding a way through. Jürgen Locadia saw his effort hit off the right post, which would have given them that vital away goal. It looked as if Jan Oblak, who had next to nothing to do all night, got a slight touch on the shot which kept it out.
Fernando Torres entered the fray in the 56th minute and the build up play immediately revved up. Torres provided another outlet for Atletico. This forced PSV to focus their attention in the defensive third on another playmaker. With five minutes to go in regular time, Torres tested Zoet from a tight angle. The visiting goalkeeper though, won that battle as he had the near post covered.
Towards the latter stages of the first half of extra time, Saul showed a bit of class. He was closed down by two PSV defenders and still managed to find Griezmann with a delicate touch. Then, the Frenchman flicked the ball with his right foot on frame, but it was weak and Zoet caught it with ease.
