Genie Bouchard’s nightmare 2015 continued as she lost to 18 year-old Swiss Belinda Bencic 6-0 5-7 6-2 in a roller-coaster match. This was the second time these two had faced each other in two months after previously meeting in Eastbourne this year with Bouchard retiring with an abdominal injury.

With the crowd firmly behind her, Bouchard would’ve hoped to have thanked them by winning just her tenth match on tour this year. However she couldn’t have started off any worse with Bencic breaking in the first game. Unfortunately for the Canadian, Bencic would not let up and went on to win the next five games to win the first set 6-0.

Given their respective forms this year with Bencic rising to a career best ranking of 20 the script appeared to be written for the second set before it had even started. However, Bouchard came out fighting, showing glimpses of the tennis that got her to the top 5 in the world last year. Taking the first three games of the second set, she gave the home crowd something to cheer about with some great tennis. This kicked Bencic into action as she went on to win the next five games giving her the opportunity to serve for the match.  Bringing up match point, it looked like Bencic would advance in straight sets to move into the second round in her first appearance at Toronto. Saving match point however, Bouchard would break to level the set 5-5 and would go on to break once more taking the match into a final set.

"It’s a step in the right direction. Looking forward to rest of the year"

The final set started with a hold of serve from both players before Bencic took the initiative to take a break lead. Going on to break again to lead 5-2, Bencic had another opportunity to serve out for the match. There was to be no repeat of the heroics in the second set from Bouchard as Bencic served the match out to 15

Not too dispondent after the match Bouchard stated that she was happy with how competitive the match was saying "I think it was pretty competitive out there after that first set. So I'm pleased with my performance tonight".

Bencic moves on to round two to face fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki who she boasts a 2-1 head to head record against, however with one of these coming via a retirement from Wozniacki.
