Wimbledon and US Open champion, a former world no.1, 30 titles to his name. Lleyton Hewitt's magnificent career came to an end today as he went down to world no.8 David Ferrer in straight sets. "Rusty" of course had one big fight left in him, but Ferrer proved to be just too good.

Although that wasn't to take anything away from the 34-year old popular Aussie, who got to bow out in front of his adoring home fans. His tennis days however aren't quite over though just yet, with Hewitt competing in the men's doubles.

Murray on the march

Andy Murray's campaign could have been derailed by the world's fastest server Sam Groth, but the Scot had no worries at all, as he dropped just five games in making his way through to the last-32. The four-time runner-up and second seed was in mighty impressive form and sets up a meeting with Portugal's Joao Sousa in the third round; the two met at the same stage last year, with Murray coming through on that occasion in straight sets.

The 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka also comfortably progressed in straight sets, defeating Czech veteran Radek Stepanek. It will be another Czech next for the world no.4, in the form of Lukas Rosol, who beat 25th seed Jack Sock in straight sets. Home favourite Bernard Tomic is also through, the 16th seed who is likely to take on Murray for a place in the quarter-finals, after defeating Italy's Simone Bolleli.

There will be a meeting between the Brisbane and Sydney champs in round three, as Milos Raonic and Viktor Troicki will go head-to-head. The big serving John Isner, a potential quarter-final opponent for Murray, and the entertaining Gael Monfils also made their way through, but Fernando Verdasco couldn't back up his win over Rafa Nadal, as he fell in four to Israel's Dudi Sela.
