Sam Querrey failed to repeat his heroics after being beaten by Milos Raonic in four sets 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals.

The sixth-seeded Canadian, who added John McEnroe to his coaching team this year, was a smart move after only losing the serve once against number 28 seed Querrey on court one.

All too much for the American

The biggest story of the tournament was Querrey defeating Novak Djokovic in the third round, becoming the first American player to beat a top ranked player at the All England since Kevin Curren famously beat McEnroe in the 1985 quarter-finals and the first American to reach the final four since Andy Roddick in 2009.

Raonic hit 13 aces, while 16 unforced errors allowed him to outplay Querrey. He will now play Roger Federer in the semi-final on Friday. The Canadian was beaten by the Swiss in straight sets in the 2014 semi-final at Wimbledon.

The Canadian set the tone for the match with a massive opening serve recorded at 137mph, he bettered it later with the fast ace at 140mph which sent an aura of shockwaves around the court in astonishment. Being far more comfortable on the baseline and for the first two sets commanded his serve.

Tie-break drama

Raonic dropped just three points on his serve within the first set and four in the second before the big-serving American found his grip on the power. Querrey’s first break point came at 5-5 in the third set which took the game to the fourth and one last chance for the American to make a comeback, as previously he had not won more than two points against any of his opponent's serves.

Querrey only dropped three sets on his way to reaching the quarter-final, two were in the first round to Lukas Rosaol. it took Raonic two hours and 31 minutes, doubled Querrey’s tally and was out of the championships.

The American had a problem with his own service game but held it until the 10th game in the fourth set when Querrey agonisingly double-faulted for the fifth time to set up the match point, having missed the forehand volley on the final point see’s Raonic victorious.
