Jamaica's Elaine Thompson won gold in the women's 200m final at Rio 2016 in a time of 21.78 at the Olympic Stadium

Thompson completes the sprint double after winning the 100m on Sunday night, finishing ahead of Dafne Schippers in second, with American Tori Bowie adding a bronze also from her silver in the 100.

Britain's Dina Asher-Smith finished in fifth.

Asher-Smith scraped into final

Finishing only fourth in her semi-final, Asher-Smith had an anxious wait to see if she would progress as one of two fastest losers.

After Jamaican Simone Facey finished third in the final semi with a time of 22.57, the 20 year-old scraped into the final by eight one-hundreths of a second.

Lining up in Lane 3, the Briton had Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast next to her. Defending world champion Dafne Schippers was in Lane 4, with American Torie Bowie and Elaine Thompson outside her - with the Jamaican aiming for a sprint double.

Thompson raced out of blocks

With Schippers speed over the finishing straight, the chasing field would have to have a lead into the bend.

Thompson raced out from the gun and opened up an advantage at the turn. The Briton pursued the Jamaican but was closer to Bowie who was well off the pace after stumbling at gun.

It was then a straight battle between the Dutch and Jamaican women. Schippers' strength and power closed the gap on Thompson over the last 20m, but with the line approaching, the 100m champion found another gear to stretch way enough and take second gold of the Rio games, as Schippers tumbled across the line in vain.

Asher-Smith after sneaking through in qualifying, replicates her result of the World Championships in Beijing last year, finishes a creditable fifth.
