Less than a week after the Rio Olympics had come to an end, many stars of track and field were back in action, as the athletes headed for Lausanne in Switzerland.

The 11th leg of the 2016 Diamond League took place in beautiful summer weather, and there were a number of stand-out performances as the athletics season heads towards it's finale.

Thompson backs up Rio gold with dominant run in Lausanne

One of the many stars on show included Jamaican sprint sensation Elaine Thompson, who won both the 100 and 200m in Rio.

Thompson carried forward that form to Switzerland, claiming an easy victory, but only after an extraordinary mess on the start-line.

After the starter had seemingly fired the gun twice to signal a false-start, some runners backed-off, and others didn't in the first instance, only for all of the women to be allowed to restart when it was proved none of them had set off early from the blocks.

Following a couple of minutes rest allowed to those who had sprinted for 90 meters before returning to the blocks, Thompson took an early lead which she didn't come close to relinquishing, winning in a time of 10.78 seconds, well ahead of American duo Jenna Prandini (11.11) and Morolake Akinosun (11.16).

Harrison and Muhammad claim solid hurdle victories

A superstar of the sport who missed out on Rio was Kendra Harrison, and she reminded everyone of her presence with an easy win in the 100m hurdles.

After setting a new World Record in London around a month ago, Harrison had to then watch on as all three of her American teammates claimed a sweep of the medals in Brazil.

Making her return, Harrison's excellent speed between the hurdles shone again, as she claimed victory in 12.42 ahead of Dawn Harper-Nelson and Jasmin Stowers, before claiming after the race that her goal for the remainder of the season is to run another personal best.

In the 400m hurdles, Dalilah Muhammad backed-up her Rio victory with another triumph in Lausanne. In her breakthrough season, Muhammad's time of 53.78 saw her see off the challenge of European duo Eilidh Doyle (54.45) and Sara Petersen (54.98) who were the only others to finish inside 55 seconds.

Asafa Powell rolled back the years to win the 100m in a time of 9.96seconds, with Britain's Joel Fearon (also of GB Bobsleigh) third in a promising time of 10.05.

Kendricks sets meet record in standout Field performance

In the field events, American pole vaulter Sam Kendricks set a new meeting record of 5.92 metres, to beat Rio silver medallist Renaud Lavillenie who could only clear 5.72.

Caterine Ibarguen maintained her dominance to win the triple-jump, with her fifth round effort of 14.76 enough for first place, while Ivana Spanovic (6.83) saw off the challenge of Lorraine Ugen (6.71) to win the long-jump.

In the men's High Jump, Mutaz Essa Barshim of Bahrain closed the gap at the top of the Diamond League standings. Winning in Lausanne as the only man to clear 2.35 metres, Barshim is now just five and two points behind Bohdan Bondarenko and Erik Kynard respectively, who each only cleared 2.32 in Switzerland.
