Andy Murray cruised into the second round at the US Open after a straight sets victory over Lukas Rosol.

The 31-year-old Czech is best known for his victory over Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon back in 2012 and was potentially tricky opponent for Murray in the opening round.

However, the British number one was in no mood hang around under the lights on the Arthur Ashe Stadium, as he raced to a 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory in just an hour and 51 minutes.

"I served very well," said Murray, after hitting 11 aces in a one-sided match.

"I don't think I had any break points against me, which was good, I had good variation on the second serve as well.”

Murray is one of five British singles players who have reached the second round in New York.

Success for the Brits

Dan Evans and Naomi Broady were also successful on the second day of the tournament, while Kyle Edmund and Johanna Konta had already made it though.

Evans, who reached a career high ranking of 60 earlier this month, beat America’s Rajeev Ram 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1. The British number two will now play the talented German Alexander Zverev in the next round.

Broady also made progressed in an all British clash with Laura Robson out on court 13. The 26-year-old recovered from a set down to win 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-4 and claim only her second main-draw victory at a Grand Slam event.

Watson and Bedene crash out

It wasn’t such good news for fellow Brits Heather Watson or Aljaz Bedene, though, as both crashed out in straight sets.

Watson was forced to call for the trainer several times as she was affected by illness during her 6-2 7-5 defeat to Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp.

Meanwhile Bedene fell to Australian Nick Kyrgios, losing 6-4 6-4 6-4.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw there victories for Kei Nishikori, eighth seed Dominic Thiem and 2009 champion Juan Martin Del Potro.

World number three seed Stan Wawrinka also progressed after an impressive 7-6 6-4 6-4 victory over Spaniard Fernando Verdasco but 12th seed David Goffin was beaten in four set by Jared Donaldson.

On the women’s side Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep both won in under an hour, while top seed Serena Williams also sailed though in straight sets.

Her sister Venus was pushed all the way by Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova, before prevailing 6-2 5-7 6-4 on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
