There was not a team that could get close to USA in the 4x100m relay final, although they will feel lucky to win gold after originally not qualifying for the final eight.

USA make their reprieve count

After dropping the baton during their heat, Team USA looked set to miss out on a fight for gold with Jamaica. Yet replays showed that they were impeded and the quartet were given the opportunity to run again in a solo time trial. The Americans duly delivered, almost breaking the World Record in the process, and qualified at the second attempt with China missing out.

Yet the Americans were not going to make the same mistake again as they compiled an almost perfect race in the final. The team of Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, English Gardner and Tori Bowie led from the outset, with Felix becoming the first female to collect five Olympic athletics golds. She explained "it's very special. It was great to join these women tonight. It's just a very unique experience".

Silver for Jamaica and bronze for Team GB

Meanwhile Jamaica's Elaine Thompson missed out on the opportunity to mirror her compatriot Usain Bolt with three sprint golds in Rio as her nation finished second. Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce raced hard to try and chase down Bowie in the home straight but the advantage was too big for the Americans.

Jamaica and USA were always expected to go head-to-head for gold and a young Team GB side would have been delighted securing bronze. It ended a 32 year wait for a women's relay medal and the team made up of Asha Philip (25), Desiree Henry (20), Dina Asher-Smith (19) and Daryll Neita (19) have a bright future ahead of them. Asher-Smith claims the result is down to the team's effort suggesting  "we have worked unbelievably hard. Out of all the teams I think we worked the hardest".
