Callum Ilott took the chequered flag at Silverstone for the first race of the F2 weekend, with Christian Lundgaard finishing second and a rejuvenated Jack Aitken finishing on the third step of the podium.

Stalls and Stormers

The race started with the Charouz of Pedro Piquet stalling on the grid, forcing the yellow flag to come out through sectors one and three. This didn't stop  Ticktum jumping up from fourth to second, after a bad start from Lundgaard hampered the Danes progress in the early stages.

All of Ticktum's hard work was undone on the entry to the Hangar Straight as he was overzealous with the throttle, forcing the car onto the grass, allowing Lundgaard to get back past.

The issues for Ticktum didn't stop there, as in the following laps the Williams academy driver had dropped down to 14th. Dams had a despairingly tough weekend, with fellow driver Sean Gelael not finishing the race.

Ilott was in a league of his own during the feature race, finishing eight seconds ahead of Lundgaard, and managing to pass the traffic after his pitstop with ease  on route to a very easy victory.

Return to form

Third place has been the best result of the season for Ticktum's fellow Williams Academy driver Aitken, a position that didn't look under threat at any given moment. Aitken hasn't had the rub of the green so far this season, prior to this weekend his points tally was eight, however after a  strong showing, the total will be sure to rise.

Championship Leader Robert Shwartzman seemed to struggle in the muggle Silverstone heat. The Russian managed to convert his poor qualifying performance of 12th to 8th during the race, as a result obtaining reverse grid pole for tomorrow. Both of the Prema drivers will be thankful to have had a better weekend this weekend, after a jarring time out last time, seeing Shwartzman and Mick Schumacher finishing in 13th and 14 respectfully.
