With the British double-header now behind us, the competition is beginning to get hot with Max Verstappen piling the pressure on the Mercedes Drivers.

Verstappen victory

Red Bull's Max Verstappen managed to come away with a superb surprise victory as he became the first non-Mercedes Driver to pick up a win this season. The Dutchman was able to capitalise on the tyre issues that mired his Mercedes counterparts to cause a major upset with many tipping Lewis Hamilton to grab his fourth win in a row.

This win takes the 22-year old up to second place in the Drivers' standings, his 77 points leave him four points ahead of Valtteri Bottas in third and 30 points behind leader Hamilton.

Mercedes tyre trouble

The soft tyres deployed by Mercedes on a hot summer's day at Silverstone are impossible to overlook when assessing what went wrong, as Hamilton and Bottas saw victory slip from their grasp and into the hands of Verstappen.

From the start of the season it had looked as though Red Bull would be the solitary team capable of challenging the black cars of Mercedes but that looked a tough ask they had seemed virtually unbeatable in the opening races.

However, the Mercs' tyres continued to be ripped to shreds on the high-speed corners of Silverstone and as the Red Bull Driver piled on the pressure with a near perfect drive, his opponents tyre issues took care of the rest for him.

Déjà vu next week?

As attentions to turn to the Spanish Grand Prix, there could be a repeat of success for Verstappen as he looks to get the better of Hamilton and Bottas for the second week in a row.

Similarly to Silverstone, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a track full of high-speed corners, which will again will put the tyres under a lot of pressure, along with the high temperatures which are forecast to be even hotter than those the drivers encountered throughout the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

Mercedes will be aided by the fact that the tyre compounds are the three hardest available though and will be hoping that helps to rule out a repeat of the problems they faced this weekend.

Hulk grabs points

After all of the excitement surrounding Nico Hulkenberg's return to Formula 1 last week, it seemed it was just not meant to be for the acting Racing Point Driver with fire-up problems ruling him out of the race before it even started.

So, with this week providing us with his full return to racing, there was a lot to get excited about again as the German lined up third on the grid. However, despite the promising prospect of a first F1 podium for Hulk, the 32-year old crossed the finish line in 7th place.

Although, Hulkenberg and his fans may have been disappointed to miss out on the podium places, 7th place and the six points that come with it is still a solid result for his first race of the season.

Vettel's mind elsewhere?

Sebastian Vettel's performances in what is his swansong Ferrari season just seem to be going progressively downhill as the weeks pass by.

Having finished outside of the points in 12th place this week, it would be fair to say Vettel's mind is already away from 'The Prancing Horse'. The four-time world champion slipped to the back of the field on the first corner and from that moment on he had a mountain to climb.

Again he was in the shadow of teammate Charles Leclerc who continues to grab Ferrari's season by the scruff of the neck and drag it across the line himself, picking up an impressive fourth off the back of a podium finish last week.

Now only five races into the season, it seems as though Vettel is already set to put this stage of his career behind him and may already have his mind on his next career move.
