Teams are set to clash once again in the prestigious Nigerian Federation’s cup as the Men’s competition reaches the Round of 16 stage while the Women’s already at the quarter-final stage. The matches are billed to go down in many selected centers across the federation on the 12th and 13th of July respectively.
On Tuesday, Sunshine Stars of Akure will go up against last year’s finalists Akwa United in Makurdi in what is the most anticipated clash of the round of 16 clash. The defending champions were on the road weekend past as they forced Pleateau United to a 1-1 in a week 26 NPFL clash. Although a point on the road is admireable, the result no doubt is a reflection of the inconsistencies of the Akwa Ibom outfit this season even though they are placed 7th on the log.
In other matches, Nigeria National League (NNL) side Crown FC from Ogbomoso will slug it out with NPFL side, Enugu Rangers in the crocodile city of Kaduna on tuesday as well while a day later, Kaduna will again play host to Rivers United and Shooting Stars of Ibadan at the Ahmadu Bello stadium. The Gbenga Ogunbote led side will be buoyed by their recent NPFL victory over Nasarawa United in Ibadan as they look to gain a continental ticket from winning this year’s competition.
NPFL table toppers, Wikki Tourists will lock horns with Plateau United at the Akure township stadium, FC Ifeanyi Ubah will also be in action on Wednesday as they take on Katsina United at the Kwara Sports Complex, Ilorin while Nasarawa United will try to bounce back from their NPFL 1-2 defeat to Shooting Stars of Ibadan when they file out against Dynamite FC of Benin City at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja on the same day.
Warri Wolves, the South-south boys will be on the road as they embark on a 542 Km journey to the middle belt region of Benue State to face Giant killers, Prime FC of Oshogbo at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi. Meanwhile, the postponed Round of 32 clash between Enyimba FC and El-Kanemi Warriors will now be played in Abuja on Wednesday, 13th July with the winner of the encounter expected to face J. Atete FC of Delta State at a later date.
In the women’s competition, Abia Angels will take to the field in Lokoja against Nasarawa Amazons, while Delta Queens and Katsina Queens do battle in Abuja on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Abuja national stadium comes alive as Champions Sunshine Queens come to town to square up against Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt while the game between Bayelsa Queens and COD United Ladies of Lagos has been moved to Lokoja.
