As it happened: Sydney Roosters cruise to victory in Brisbane after 59-0 rout against the Broncos

Thank you all for staying with me and following along as the Roosters shook off the loss of Tedesco to cruise to a 59-0 victory over the Broncos. There will be more coverage of the weekends NRL action here on VAVEL so do make sure to check out for that, until then I’ve been Tom Young, goodnight.

The Broncos will look to bounce back in Manly as they travel to face the Sea Eagles next Thursday whilst the Roosters continue their road trip when they travel to the Bankwest Stadium to face the Bulldogs.

An incredible night for the Roosters. They leave the Suncorp Stadium with two points after a near-perfect performance.

They scores five tries in each half to inflict Brisbane’s biggest ever home defeat.

Flangan missed a routine conversion at the start of the night but has been perfect since. His ninth conversion of the night sails over. 22 points for the Sydney half tonight.

And another one!

Josh Morris with a tremendous offload to the supporting Keary and he finds Josh’ brother Brett who races away to score Sydney’s tenth try of the night!

A simply outstanding performance from the reigning champions.

8/9 for Flanagan now. 

53-0 the Roosters lead. Incredible.

You couldn’t have a Roosters rout without a score for Tupou could you? The powerhouse winger touches down in the corner to overtake Dave Brown as the Rooster fourth top scorer of all time.

The Broncos are back to 13 as Arthars returns from the bin.

Flanagan nails his seventh conversion of the night to take his personal tally to 18, a new record  for a Rooster player against Brisbane and, with 15 to go, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him add to that tally.

He celebrated like he’d got the ball down and that’s because he had! The TMO overturns the referees call as Crichton gets his second of the game.

There’s yet another trip to the bunker for the Roosters as Crichton crashes over the line from dummy half.

It’s sent up as no try but he looks to have got the ball down to me...

The bunker deems that the ball was knocked forward by the Roosters.

The Broncos will have the head and feed on their 10.

Could this be another score for the Roosters? The TMO is checking for a potential knock on from the high kick.

6/7 from the boot of Flanagan who, to be fair to him, has had some very straightforward conversions tonight.

The Roosters are having fun now!

They break down the left through Tupou who fires the offload back to Keary, he finds the onrushing Collins and there’s no stopping him. He crashes in under the sticks for yet another Sydney score.

Things are going from bad to worse for the Broncos as back-to-back penalties sees Jesse Arthars sent to the bin.

The pressure continues to mount as the Roosters receive another penalty on the fifth as the Broncos markers fail to get square.

The Broncos completion rate has been abysmal tonight as they turn the ball over once more.

That just eight completed sets from 19 for the hosts. 

Flanagan with the gimme. The Roosters lead is up to 35.

I was about to write about how the Broncos seem to have settled easier into this second half and before I know it, the Roosters are up the other end to score!

We’re back underway in the second half as the Broncos take possession. 

It’s been all Sydney in the opening 40 as they run in five tries to no reply to all but end this as a contest.

That’s the icing on a delicious first-half cake if you’re a Roosters fan!

Luke Keary nails a one pointer to give his side a 29-0 lead heading into the sheds!

The bunker agrees with the referees on-field call of no try and this ones chalked off.

With the way this game is going though, it shouldn’t matter too much.

The Roosters look to have got over for their sixth try of the night as Josh Morris gets over.

Or do we? This ones being sent up to the bunker for suspected offside...

He’s not missing that. Flanagan converts his own try and the lead is up to 28.

This has been as one-sided a performance as you’re likely to see in the NRL.

The Roosters turn defence to attack in the blink of an eye as Friend finds the onrushing Radley, he draws the man before feeding Flanagan who runs the ball under the sticks to put this one out of sight.

The Broncos get a penalty on the last for a knee in the tackle.

They will take a rare trip into the Roosters half.

Flanagan makes it three from four as he extends the Roosters lead to 22.

The Roosters have been relentless when they’ve had the field position and they’ve added to their lead once more.

Crichton is the man on the score sheet this time as the Roosters left flank continues to dominate.

The Broncos are really struggling to see out their sets here.

Croft has turned the ball over in the tackle to give the Roosters more good field position.

A first sight of the Roosters line for Brisbane who break down the left before Corey Oates is dumped into touch by Morris. 

The Roosters will have the head and feed on their 20.

The Roosters have been levels above in the opening quarter.

You fear for the Broncos here.

Flanagan can’t miss that one. The Roosters lead 16-0.

The Roosters get another set restart and on the first tackle of the new set Radley powers through the defence to crash down under the sticks.

But once again they cough up the ball in the tackle and the Roosters are back on the attack.

This Broncos defence is taking a battering at the moment.

The Broncos do well to keep the Roosters out and they then earn themselves a pressure relieving penalty. 

They’ll begin the set on the 30.

What a hit that is! 

Radley absolutely nails Flagler who spills the ball in the tackle to give the Roosters the head and feed 30 metres out.

We’re just over ten minutes in but you feel the next score is massive in this one. The Roosters can smell blood here.

Flanagan makes no mistake this time. Nailing the touchline conversion to extend his sides lead. 

But they’ll only need three!

The Roosters work the ball from right to left with Brett Morris going from scorer to provider, finding Joseph Manu on the overlap and he crosses in the corner for his first try of the evening.

We see our first set restart of the night as the Roosters get a fresh set of six on the last!

They’ll have six to go from 20 metres out.

And that they do! Josh Morris does very well to take the pass off his brother Brett and has the power to spin out of the attempted tackle from Carrigan and get the ball down for the first try of the night. 
There’s a quick check with the TMO who confirms the referees on field decision of a try. 

There’s a scramble on the Broncos line on the last and it ends with a scrum down for the Roosters. 

A great chance for the visitors to open the scoring here...

The Roosters are awarded the first penalty of the night for offside. They will begin the set on their 40 metre line.

The teams have taken to the field and kick off is just moments away.

With Jake Turpin officially ruled out of this one there is a  Broncos confirmed debut for highly-rated youngster Cory Paix tonight.

Turpin is set to miss up to a month of action with a crack to his tibia.

There's some big team news ahead of this one as the Roosters talisman James Tedesco has been ruled out of the game with an illness.

Brett Morris moves to fullback paving the way for Ryan Hall to make his first start of the season over on the right wing.

The Brisbane Broncos pack has taken another huge blow as hooker Jake Turpin misses out with a knee injury sustained in the defeat to Parramatta.

He joins captain Alex Glenn, David Fifita and Tevita Pangai on the sidelines. 

In Turpin’s absence, Cory Paix is set to make his NRL debut.

There are no changes to the 17-man squad that defeated the Rabbitohs last time out, as Collins continues in the front row.

There will be match day checks for Taukeaiho and Aubusson, both of whom have been named in the reserves as precaution.

Lock forward Victor Radley has been cleared to play having successfully appealed against his one-match ban for a dangerous throw in round three.

The Broncos had started the season in impressive form, picking up two wins from their opening two, but were comprehensively beaten on this ground by Parramatta last time out.

Their fitness looked an issue in the second half as they let in four tries without scoring. They know they’ll have to improve if they are to pick up a victory against the champions!

The reigning champions will be looking to kick on having picked up their first win of the season last time out, defeating their fierce rivals the South Sydney Rabbitohs in round three.

Halfback Kyle Flanngan had a fine indiviudal performance in that 28-12 win as he grabbed a try and four conversions. He’ll be hoping to recapture that form tonight.

This is the opening game of the fourth round of the competition after it returned to action following the COVID-19 enforced break!
