During the St. Louis Rams training camp practice on Sunday, starting cornerback E.J. Gaines limped off the field in pain apparently because of a leg injury. Team officials initially didn’t think the injury was too bad but now they are thinking it could be worse than what they originally thought.

According to Chris Trapasso on Twitter (@ChrisTrapasso), there isn’t anything set in stone with Gaines’ injury, but it’s not looking good and he will be getting a second opinion from a specialist.

Joe Lyons of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reported that Gaines is struggling with a foot injury, and it could possibly be his plantar fascia, which supports the arch on the bottom of the foot.

St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher had this to say, “We're going to have to do some tests. He got stepped on, which is encouraging as opposed to the other things. So we'll do some tests. Right now, they are not too concerned. He's very sore but that typically can happen when you get stepped on."

This is more encouraging, hearing that Gaines was stepped on and it was not anything like him twisting his knee, rolling his ankle, colliding with a teammate, or anything of that nature.

Missing Gaines would hurt the Rams secondary, as Gaines started 15 games last season after being a sixth round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He had defended 10 passes as a rookie. He also added two interceptions.

Gaines was set to compete once again for the starting cornerback position opposite of Janoris Jenkins. Gaines was going to be competing with Trumaine Johnson, who isn’t bad but Gaines has certainly looked like the better player thus far, until the injury. Gaines will likely miss a few training camp practices but it is hopeful that he will be ready for the seasons start.
