For the second year in a row, the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship went to Muddy Creek in Blountville, TN. On a track that is normally used for amateur racing, Muddy Creek once again showed that it is capable of hosting exciting professinal racing.

Moto 1

Justin Barcia got the holeshot in the first moto of the day, but quickly threw the lead away when he crashed on the first lap. This allowed his teammate Phil Nicoletti to take the lead, with Jason Anderson and Ryan Dungey rounding out the top three after the first lap. Blake Baggett, Christophe Pourcel, and Chad Reed all got bad starts, finishing the first lap in 14th, 32nd, and 38th respectively. Nicoletti kept the lead for the first two laps, but was then passed by Ryan Dungey. Over the next couple of laps, Nicoletti would lose two more positions to both Jason Anderson and Ken Roczen. Once Roczen got into third, he caught up to Anderson and pressured him for a few laps. However, Anderson responded very well, and was able to gap Roczen a bit by the halfway mark. At that point, Dungey was putting down the fastest lap times, and had already opened up a very comfortable lead over Anderson in second. Meanwhile, Baggett had moved his way through the pack all the way up to seventh place right behind Weston Peick in sixth and Cole Seely in fifth. Over the next few laps, Baggett was able to pass both of them to get up into fifth. By the end of the 30 minute countdown, Seely had also been passed by both Weston Peick and Broc Tickle to drop all the way back to eighth. Back up front, Dungey continued to extend his lead, and eventually took the checkered flag 27 seconds ahead of Anderson in second and 31 seconds ahead of Roczen in third. Pourcel ended up dropping out of the race after 13 laps, but Reed would make his way up to 18th by the end of the race. After a first lap crash that put him outside the top 20, Justin Barcia was able to come through the pack all the way up to ninth place.

Moto 2

Ken Roczen was able to get into the lead right way in moto 2, and was followed by Cole Seely, Blake Baggett, and Ryan Dungey. After a great first moto, Jason Anderson got off to a bad start and finished Lap 1 in 22nd. Dungey was quickly able to get past Baggett for third, but struggled to pass Seely; Seely held Dungey off for three laps before Dungey finally found a way around. By that point, Roczen had already opened up an eight second lead, but Dungey charged forward and slowly began catching him, setting the fastest lap time of the moto in the process. Meanwhile, Baggett was able to catch up to Seely and passed him at the halfway mark. A few laps later back up front, Dungey had closed the gap to six seconds, but then a small crash lost him seven seconds to Roczen in a single lap. Dungey continued his charge forward, but the gap was too large, hence Roczen eventually took the checkered flag and the overall win with a nine second lead over Dungey. Blake Baggett held on for third, but was 42 seconds behind Roczen. Anderson managed to recover from his bad start and finish in fourth after an incredible ride through the pack, giving him the last overall podium spot.

With it being the first race since title-favourite Eli Tomac's injury, everyone was waiting to see who would fill that top podium spot. To no surprise, Ryan Dungey proved to be the fastest, and took the overall win with ease despite a small crash in the second moto. However, reigning champ Ken Roczen is getting faster with each round, and now has his first moto win of the season; perhaps Roczen can get on a win streak akin to last year. Watch for Roczen to potentially get his first overall win of the year at round 5 coming up this weekend at High Point in Mt. Morris, PA.
