England got a massive victory, and Mexico couldn't complete the comeback, as the situation in Group F of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup became a little clearer on Saturday.

The story of today's match was probably the play of Fran Kirby. The Reading FC striker is one of the most popular women's footballers across Europe, and she came to play on this day.

In the first fifteen minutes, England looked a little disjointed and tense. Coming off a 1-0 loss to group favorites France, the Lionesses badly needed points from their match with Mexico. The Mexicans were coming off a frustrating draw with Colombia, after seeing their late game winning goal disallowed after a controversial foul call.

In the 22nd minute, the Lionesses had a fantastic chance when defender Lucy Bronze did well down the right flank to find Jill Scott at the edge of the box. Scott turned and squared it up for Kirby, but her shot didn't have enough on it to roll past Mexico keeper Cecilia Santiago.

As the first half rolled on, England proved to be the better team, creating a plethora of chances for themselves. In the 44th minute, Chelsea LFC forward Eniola Aluko fired a shot that just missed, banging into the crossbar after she had dribbled right at the Mexican defense.

At halftime, the game was tied at zeros, but it seemed like England was firmly knocking on the door.

In the 70th minute, the English finally had their goal. Thanks to some great buildup by Karen Carney and Toni Duggan, Kirby ended up with the ball in great position, and toe-poked it past Santiago and into the goal.

England would add another goal in the 82nd minute, courtesy of Karen Carney. Defender Alex Greenwood flicked a ball towards the back post, and Carney cleanly headed it into the goal. Just like that, England was up 2-0.

Mexico weren't without their chances, however. England outshot Mexico 23-20, but Mexico had seven shots on target. While England had a 60-40 possession advantage in the match, Mexico continued to fight throughout, as they always do.

In the 90th minute, Mexico cut England's lead in half, when Fabiola Ibarra chipped in a rebound goal off after England keeper Karen Bardsley couldn't hold on to Charlyn Corral's shot from the right side.

Mexico couldn't quite do enough to earn themselves a tying goal, but they definitely played hard. Mexico sit in last place of Group F, which is unfortunate because they really should have three points from their first game. Even so, Mexico will have to beat a talented France team that struggled today if they want to advance to the Round of 16.

England sit in second place in Group F, one point behind Colombia. They lead France by one goal in the goal differential column, but it looks like England have a great chance to advance further in this World Cup. Kirby and Carney really played well for the Lionesses, but they also had strong performances out of Bardsley, Jill Scott, and Jade Moore.

Both Mexico and England play their final group matches this Wednesday. Mexico-France will be in Lansdowne Stadium in Ottawa, while England-Colombia will be played in Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
