It was a hard game but Brazil got the job done. After 120 minutes of absolute parity against Portugal, the quarterfinal tie had to be solved from the penalty spot and there, the South American side was far more precise and they escaped with the win to clinch a berth in the U20 World Cup semifinals.

That doesn't mean their win was fair, however, as Portugal managed to create consistent danger and they should've won the game rather easily. Brazil struggled to settle in the pitch and they didn't have the flair and the quickness they had in past encounters.

Portugal came close to score the first goal in the first half when Joao Nunes headed a ball home but Jean was magnificent to save the attempt in the 3rd minute. Andre Miguel was also close to find the back of the net with another aerial attempt but he wasn't sharp and his effort went wide. Brazil wasn't able to create anything dangerous as Boschilia was tightly marked so the first 45 minutes ended with a scoreless draw.

Brazil sent Manchester United playmaker Andreas Pereira to the pitch in the second half looking to get a spark in the final third but he wasn't able to change the game. Portugal, on the other hand, kept creating chances but Jean responded every time the team needed him. The clearer chance of the game occured in the 85th minute when a shot from Marcos Lopes rattled the post when Jean was completely beaten.

There were no goals after 90 minutes so the game was taken into extra time and both sides made substitutions looking to shake things up. While Brazil looked a bit more composed, they weren't accurate and Portugal continued to miss their scoring opportunities. Both sides looked tired as the game wore on and their fate had to be decided from the penalty spot.

Brazil showed surprising accuracy in the penalty shootout. Andreas Pereira, Danilo and Gabriel Jesus all converted while Portugal only managed to score through Marcos Lopes. Raphael Guzzo, Andre Valente and Nuno Santos all missed for the European side so the 3-1 score allowed Brazil to clinch a berth in the tournament's semifinals.

It wasn't Brazil's prettiest game but they got the job done. Sometimes, that's all that counts.
