The Portland Timbers announced today the signing of left back Vytautas Andriuškevičius. Prior to this, the Lithuanian left back played two seasons with Dutch Eredivisie league club SC Cambuur. Over his career, Andriuškevičius has played more than 120 matches for clubs in the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland and Lithuania.

International experience

The 25-year-old defender has played for the Lithuanian National Team for about half of his footballing career. This includes eight appearances for the Lithuanian U19 and U21 teams as well as 23 caps with the senior Lithuanian National Team. Of note, he made two starts for Lithuania during 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying against Slovakia and Lichtenstein.

Portland needs help at left back

Left back has been a position of need for the Timbers all year and fans hope that the Lithuanian can bring back some of what was lost following the departure of Jorge Villafana. Timbers coach Caleb Porter told Timbers.com that, “Vytas has a strong mentality and the physical tools to succeed in MLS. His profile is a good fit for our system as we want our outside backs to be effective defenders first, and that is his biggest strength. He has also shown the ability to push forward in the attack and provide width and service, which is another important aspect we need from that position. In addition, he has a frame that should benefit us on set pieces. We are pleased to add his experience and quality to our club at this crucial stage of the season."

The ability to push forward in the attack should stand out to Timbers fans as none of Zarek Valentin, Jermain Taylor, or Chris Klute has had much success in springing the attack from the left, something that former Timber Villafana excelled at in the club’s 2015 championship run. Speaking of Klute, the expected starter has most recently been seen playing for Timbers 2 in the United Soccer League. It seems that he may be on his way out following the signing of the Lithuanian international. Andriuškevičius should be expecting to fight for a starting position in Portland.
