The 23-year-old Karolina Pliskova, the best ranked twin, may be on the rise, but it cannot be said grass was her thing. Experiencing little success on the surface prior to her Birmingham runner-up campaign a couple weeks ago, The Czech, currently ranked 11th had ahead of her Coco Vandeweghe, the world number 47, in a second round match that looked like a recipe for another upset.

And that’s what happened. The first set was as consistent as it gets for the serves, as no break points were converted throughout the frame. In fact, only the Czech had to stare at the scenario of losing a service game: five times she served with her back against the wall, but in all of them she survived. To break the tie in the first set – which included even four consecutive love holds as the 6/6 loomed larger every time – 12 extra points were played.

But then, a mini-break fest ensued. The first three points of the tie-break were all won by returners, before Vandeweghe served two holds. Still down 2-3 on Pliskova’s serve, she earned the mini break back to level the decider. The next time she stepped up to serve, down 3-4, the two mini-holds proved crucial, as the Czech lost another point serving, allowing the American to successfully serve it out for a 7-5 tie-break win in 54 minutes.

In the second set, Coco Vandeweghe kept pressuring her opponent’s serve, forcing 11 break points. Despite converting only two, it was more than enough. However, it was the 11th-seeded Pliskova who drew first blood, breaking the former world number 32 in her first service game, going up 2/0 early in the set. Despite consolidating shortly after, Vandeweghe went on to win five consecutive games, before Kristyna’s twin sister held down 3/5, facing elimination.

When the 23-year old New Yorker stepped up to serve for the match, however, she felt no pressure, acing her way to the round of 32 at 15, which sets her for new highs at Wimbledon. Her previous best result was a second round exit last year – that also marked her first main draw win at the All England Club.

Vandeweghe now faces another seeded player in Samantha Stosur who is seeded 22nd. The Australian Grand Slam champion beat Urszula Radwanska today to advance in the bracket. The American leads their head-to-head, 2-1, including a win at this year’s Australian Open.
