Ekaterina Makarova advanced to the 2nd round of the Australian Open after defeating Australian Maddison Inglis 6-3, 6-0 on show court three on Tuesday during the slam's second day. The 21st seed Russian will face the winner of the match between Tatjana Maria and Olga Govortsova.

Makarova gets the crucial break, wins the first

In the first set, Ekaterina Makarova didn’t waste any time putting pressure on Maddison Inglis. Tied 30-all, Makarova hit a backhand winner that just caught the line to get the first break point of the match.

However, the Australian responded quickly in the next game as she got three break points immediately as the Russian struggled to serve. After saving the first break point with a great serve, she hit a forehand error on the next point to give Inglis the break back.

Both players settled down after the exchange of breaks, holding their service games without facing a break point. Tied 3-all, Makarova got two break points after hitting a winner. After Inglis had saved one, the Australian double-faulted in the next point to give Makarova the break.

The Russian consolidated the break in the next game to go up 5-3. Makarova broke Inglis’ serve at love in the following game to win the set in 30 minutes.

The Russian got 61 percent of her first serves in while the Australian was close by with 57 percent. However, Makarova got more points, 73 percent, from those first serves while Inglis only managed to win 47 percent. It indicates how good the return game of the Russian was while the Australian didn’t put a lot of returns in play.

Makarova bagels Inglis to win the second

After holding her service game, Makarova immediately put the pressure on Inglis. After forcing a deuce, the Russian got the early break after a forehand error from the Australian. In the next game, Inglis got two break points as Makarova appeared to struggle to serve in the game. However, the Australian failed to convert both break points as she hit back to back errors. Makarova would hold and win another early break to go up 3-0.

In the following game, Inglis continued to pile up errors as she got in trouble again as Makarova got two break points. After saving both points with forehand winners to force deuce, Inglis hit a double fault to give Makarova the advantage at deuce and then sent a forehand long to give the Russian two breaks in the second set.

Makavora didn’t look back as she consolidated the break and closed the set by breaking Inglis’ third service game at love in 28 minutes to win the match. Both players dipped in their first serve percentages, but the Russian won 82 percent from the first serves put in play that indicated how Inglis continued to return poorly.

Final stats of the match

Makarova didn’t serve well compared to her previous matches in the past, getting only 59 percent of her first serves in while Inglis only got 52 percent. However, Makarova won 77 percent the first serves while Inglis only won 44 percent.

This statistics indicated how Makarova had a good return game while Inglis failed in the category.  The Russian hit 18 winners and 17 unforced errors while the Australian only hit eight winners but had 28 unforced errors, telling how she helped Makarova win the match.
