In the first major upset of day 3, number 2 seed and Chinese number 1 Li Na was knocked out of Roland Garros by unseeded Kristina Mladenovic 7-5 3-6 6-1.

This was a bad loss for the Australian Open champion as she made too many errors throughout the match. Even though she took the second set, it wasn't enough in the end as Mladenovic made good use of any errors Li made, as well as good play of her own to power though to the next round.

"It's incredible, without you I couldn't have done it," Mladenovic told the rapturous French crowd with tears welling in her eyes.

Mladenovic, 21, was once touted as being the next big thing in French women's tennis. She won her first WTA title in Taipei in 2012 and in the middle of 2013, she was as high as 37 in the rankings. Since then, however, her ranking has dropped considerably, now 103 in the world.

She now faces Alison Riske of the USA in her second round match. If she wins this match, it will be her best performance at her home slam of Roland Garros.

This leaves the bottom half of the draw lopsided with the top half including both Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova
