The shocks just keep on coming on Day 3, following on from Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka being eliminated from the tournament yesterday, today has been no exception so far in terms of upsets.

On a chilly day in Paris, number 11 seed and Rome semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov was defeated in straight sets by giant Croat Ivo Karlovic 6-4 7-5 7-6(4) in 1 hour and 58 minutes.

“I had a good clay court season, so I'm not putting my head down," the Bulgarian commented. "It's just going to motivate me even more, and I'm going to come back even stronger. Actually, that gives me extra time for me to rest a little bit and just get ready for the upcoming weeks on grass. That's something really exciting to look forward to.”

Karlovic, the 35 year old from Zagreb, reached the second round of Roland Garros for the third time in his career by defeating the Bulgarian. He reached the final of Dusseldorf last week before being beat in the final by Phillipp Kohlschreiber.

The big server used his huge serve to his advantage utilising it throughout the match, bringing out a big serve just when he was required to. He will face Andreas Haider-Maurer in the second round.

With Dimitrov's defeat, this really paves the way for last year's beaten finalist David Ferrer. Ferrer was scheduled to meet the Bulgarian in the 4th round and with him being defeated today, there is a much easier path for the Spaniard.
