Long known for its video game style offense, the Boise State Broncos used a pair of defensive touchdowns, and another takeaway that led to another score, to rout the Connecticut Huskies 38-21 Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Connecticut.

Bronco quarterback Grant Hedrick threw for 231 yards, including two touchdown tosses to Matt Miller to lead the way for the Boise State offense. In a role reversal, Miller also hit Hedrick for another touchdown pass.

But it was the Bronco defense that both set the tone and sealed the deal against the Huskies. The afternoon began with a UConn fumble that was scooped up by Tanner Vallejo and returned 31 yards for a touchdown.

Then in the fourth quarter, trailing 24-21, UConn quarterback Chandler Whitmer threw an interception at the hands of Jonathan Moxie that later turned into a Hedrick-to-Miller connection for six points. Boise State ended the afternoon by picking off yet another Whitmer pass, as Donte Deayon stole the ball away from a UConn receiver and strolled 50 yards for the Broncos’ culminating score.

Not to be outdone entirely by its defense, Boise State did go to its bag of tricks once as Miller found Hedrick in the end zone on an end-around play good for seven yards and a score.

Despite dominating the time of possession battle, UConn could not overcome its three turnovers, all of which led to Boise State touchdowns. Whitmer threw for 209 yards and two scores for the Huskies.

The victory over the Huskies brings Boise State’s early season record to 2-1, while UConn falls to 1-2.
