As the saying goes, PLAY BALL!

Manhattan has a pump up video before their lineup, that's a new touch, they didn't have that before the Bucknell game

One thing I have noticed just seeing it from floor level right now is Columbia is a big team they have a handful of big kids on their roster

With about 10 minutes until gametime the teams are taking the floor here at Draddy Gymnasium

Only about an hour until tip between the Jaspers and Lions at Draddy Gymnasium

The Columbia Lions and Manhattan Jaspers tip off in just a few hours, please stay tuned to this live for updates throughout the game tonight at Draddy Gym in Riverdale, New York

The key players for Columbia are Maodo Lo and Luke Petrasek. The Lions senior guard from Germany, Lo, has played really well for Columbia this season. Lo has led the team on both sides of the ball with 15.6 points per game and 2.2 steals per game. He needs to play well tonight against the Jaspers to help them win. Luke Petrasek is a junior forward for the Lions and has played tremendously for them this season. Petrasek leads the Lions in field goal percentage (62.7 percent), rebounds per game (4.8), and blocks per game (1.0). If Columbia will improve they need to get big impacts from their two stars in Luke Petrasek and Maodo Lo

The key players for Manhattan are senior Shane Richards and sophomore Zane Waterman. Richards has been a key player since he arrived four years ago as a freshman, but especially this year where at points he looks like a one man show out there. This season Richards has led the Jaspers with 18.5 points per game and hit the last second shot to put to give his team their lone victory. Zane Waterman has helped on both sides of the ball for the Jaspers. Waterman has shot the ball at a 44.4 percent clip from the field this season, and has averaged a decent 8.8 points per game thus far. On the defensive side of the ball, Waterman leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game. If the Jaspers get big impacts from Zane Waterman and Shane Richards they have a good chance of leaving this game with a W and improving their record to 2-5.

The keys to the game for the Columbia Lions are forcing Manhattan into turnovers and continue to hit the three ball. The Lions need to keep the ball for long stretches of the game by forcing the Jaspers to make mistakes and turn the ball over. If that happens they have a good chance to win this game. The Lions are great at hitting the three as mentioned below. In Manhattan’s only win this season, the George Mason Patriots only hit four threes all night long. The Lions have to hit more than that if they want to take the few minute train ride back to campus after this game.

The keys to the game for the Manhattan Jaspers to get back in the win column are to shoot the ball at a more consistent rate and protect their home court. The Jaspers have not shot the ball well thus far this season, only scoring 64.5 points per game, which obviously if you look at their record is not good enough to be one of the top teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. They can’t rely so much on Shane Richards, who has carried them on the offensive end thus far this season. If they can get big plays from other players they have a good chance to get back on the right track. Teams have come into Draddy Gymnasium this season and, except for George Mason, have run all over the Jaspers and completely had their way. The Jaspers have to make teams fear going into Draddy and reverse the trend against the Colombia Lions

The Columbia Lions and Manhattan Jaspers have played 23 times in the past. The Lions own a 14-9 record over the Jaspers. The first time these two teams played was all the way back in 1917-1918. The last time they played was at Columbia’s home gym Levien Gymnasium in November of 2013 when the Jaspers inched past the Lions by a score of 71-70.

In Columbia’s last game they blew out the Delaware Blue Hens by a score of 82-69 at Levien Gymnasium in Upper Manhattan. In that game the Lions were powered by Maodo Lo, who contributed to the 50 second half points after the team went into the locker room at halftime down 38-32 to the Hens. This season, the Lions have scored 79.8 points per game good for 80th in the country and only allowing 71.8 points per game. The Lions have been pretty reliable this season from behind the three point line, making 108 out of 282 attempts and averaging 10.8 threes per game.

The Jaspers one win came thanks to a clutch shot with one second left on the clock by senior Shane Richards over George Mason. On average this season, the Jaspers have given up 81.2 points per game and have only scored 64.5 points per game, which is tied for 319th in the country. Manhattan has played pretty good defense this season, forcing 18.3 turnovers and compiling 8.7 steals per game. Shane Richards has powered the Jaspers this season, averaging a team leading 18.5 points per game. Manhattan is currently riding a three game losing streak, with losses to Fordham, Siena and Marist. In the Jaspers last game they lost at home to the 2-4 Marist Red Foxes by a score of 75-70, thanks to a big performance by their star Brian Parker.

The Manhattan Jaspers welcome the Columbia Lions to Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, New York for a midweek showdown. The Jaspers have not played well to start the season with a 1-5 record, 0-2 in the MAAC. They are 10th in the MAAC thus far this season, only ahead of the Rider Broncs. Columbia has played considerably more games than the Jaspers and have a 5-5 record. The Lions have not played in any Ivy League games thus far this season.
