The Chicago Red Stars and Sky Blue FC have drawn 1-1, in this matchup of NWSL teams in front of a very much pro Red Stars crowd at Benedict University in Lisle, Illinois. According to the Red Stars twitter, the game at BU was sold out. After this game Sky Blue is 4-7-6, good for 18 points. The Red Stars are 7-2-7 for 28 points.

The 2nd place Red Stars got on the board first when Adriano Leon took the beautiful Arin Gilliard cross and put it in the wide open net. Samantha Kerr started the seventh place Sky Blue FC's goal, with a nice steal and then she took the shot from the top of the box, and got it just out of the reach of Red Stars Goalie Michelle Dalton. The game was 1-1 when in the 83rd minute Sky Blue’s Joelle Filignos appeared to put Sky Blue up, but the ref made a nice call and called the goal off for a handball. Sam Kerr’s goal this afternoon was her fourth goal of the season and has two assists in just six games for the New Jersey based Sky Blue FC. Lori Chalupny of the Red Stars had the only discipline in the game, getting a yellow in the 64th minute.

According to SkyBlueFC.com, head coach Jim Gabarra said, “I am disappointed for the players because I feel we played well enough to leave here with three points, Chicago is a difficult team to play, and I was very pleased with how we performed outside of the first 20 minutes. In the second half, we really instilled our will and style of play, and we did a very good job of creating chances.”

Sky Blue would get close again in the 85th minute when a Cami Levin bomb was tipped above the bar by Dalton to keep it a 1-1.

The game was very much a game of two halves with the Red Stars getting many of the scoring chances in the first half and dominating the play. While in the second half, Sky Blue got many of the chances and dominated play. Both teams had different objectives coming into the game, SBFC wanted to continue their winning ways coming off a 2-0 shutout win over the Houston Dash, last Friday in Houston. While the Red Stars were looking to get back in the win column after losing to the Portland Thorns on August 9th in Portland.

SBFC returns to action on Saturday, against one of the NWSL’s best in the Thorns who are powered by Nadine Angerer and Tobin Heath at Yurack Field on the campus of Rutgers University. The Red Stars go back at it on Sunday, staying home at Village of Lisle- Benedict University Sports Complex, against the Washington Spirit powered by World Cup champions Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris.
