Despite even more rainfall on day two at the Aegon Championships, a large number of matches were completed on Tuesday in London, including the top seed and a handful of host Brits. There were also some upsets on a wild and wet day in London. Let’s take a look back at day two at the Queen’s Club.

Results

The home fans had lots to cheer for on Tuesday, with three Brits in action, led by top seed Andy Murray. The four-time champion faced a tough test in the form of grass-court specialist Nicolas Mahut, but showed some why he’s so good at the Queen’s Club by claiming a straight sets victory. Check out the full recap here. Also victorious on Tuesday was Aljaz Bedene, who set a second round clash with Murray by defeating Benoit Paire in an epic 7-6(6), 6-7(7), 6-4 victory. It wasn’t all good news for the Brits, as James Ward was ousted in straight sets by last week’s s-Hertogenbosch runner-up Gilles Muller.

The big upset of the day saw second seed Stan Wawrinka crash out in straight sets to Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco. The Spaniard was impressive on serve, saving all eight break points he faced, scoring a pair of breaks in the first set and dominating the final set tiebreak to seal the upset in an hour and a half. Despite facing more pressure on his serve, Verdasco was up to the task and came up clutch on the key points to score his second top-five win of the year.

2014 champion Grigor Dimitrov’s struggles continued at the Queen’s club on Tuesday, as the Bulgarian was ousted in the straight sets by Janko Tipsarevic. The first set was tight, with world number 553 Tipsarevic taking in it a tiebreak. Dimitrov responded by winning the second, but could not grab a break in the decider, eventually falling 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3. Despite constant pressure against his serve, the Serbian was up to the test, saving seven of eight break points, while converting one of his three.

The other two seeded players in action were both victorious, as fifth seed Marin Cilic and sixth seed Roberto Bautista Agut both scored three-set victorious. Cilic dropped the opening set against the grass-loving Spanish lefty Feliciano Lopez but bounced back to win the last two sets in a battle of big servers where they combined for 29 aces (17 for Cilic, 12 for Lopez). In a battle of defence versus offence, Bautista Agut narrowly edged big-hitting Sam Querrey in three tiebreaks. In an ironic twist of fate, Bautista Agut did not hold break points in the first and third sets, both of which he won in tiebreaks.

In other action, Adrian Mannarino defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, while lucky loser Jiri Vesely took advantage of his luck and defeated Jeremy Chardy to reach the second round. Vasek Pospisil’s exhaustion seemed to catch up with him after battling through a rain-delayed qualifying campaign, falling in straight sets to Donald Young. Bernard Tomic won a blockbuster with former world number ten Kevin Anderson in straight sets.

Not all matches were completed on day two, with the blockbuster between third seed Milos Raonic and the feisty Nick Kyrgios being postponed after the pair split the opening two sets 6-7(5), 6-4. Weather permitting, first round action will be wrapped up tomorrow, with second round play getting underway.
