Centuries from Eoin Morgan and Joe Root secured a seven wicket win for England at Trent Bridge.

It was the highest ever ODI run chase for England as they cruised to victory with six overs remaining. New Zealand had posted 349-7 from their 50 overs. Martin Guptill hit 53 including eight fours and one six and shared an 88-run opening partnership with Brendon McCullum who scored 35.

In-form batsmen Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor once again punished England’s bowlers. Williamson hit a well-constructed 90 with 12 fours and one six, while Taylor added 42 as the pair shared a 101-run stand.

Some big hitting from Grant Elliott (55*) and Mitchell Santner (44) saw the tourists posts a very challenging 349-7.

In a series that isn’t very pleasant for the bowlers, the figures were once again expensive. David Willey and Ben Stokes picked up two wickets each, and one wicket apiece for Steven Finn, Mark Wood and Adil Rashid.

England got the chase off to a lightning start with Jason Roy and Alex Hales hitting the Kiwi bowlers to all parts of the ground. Hales was destructive with 67 from 38 balls, seven fours and four sixes. The Nottinghamshire batsmen hit Mitchell McClenaghan for 22 off his opening over. Roy batted well at the other end for 38 as the pair put on 100 for first wicket.

Morgan and Root impress again

Hales and Roy fell with the score on 111. In came Root and Morgan who shared an excellent 198 partnership. Root (106) was his usual classy self, rotating the strike well and punishing anything off line. Morgan backed up his three fifties in the series with an explosive 113, hitting 12 fours and five sixes in the process. Root survived an early dropped catch by Taylor but never looked in any trouble from then on.

The partnership was outstanding with the New Zealand bowlers not having much luck. England captain Morgan was eventually out for 113 but the game was pretty much over. Stokes came in and launched a quick 19 not out and with Root, helped the hosts secure a seven wicket win.

England break numerous records

England passed 300 for the fourth successive ODI. They had not done it before in more than two games in a row. Their previous highest aggregate number of runs scored in a five-match series was 1,399. They already have 1,425 with a game to spare. Root and Morgan's 198 was England's second highest ODI stand for the third wicket, behind Neil Fairbrother and Graeme Hick's 213 versus West Indies in 1991. It was also their highest ODI stand against New Zealand for any wicket

A good comeback for England after Sunday’s defeat means the series is level at 2-2 as they go into the final match in Durham on Saturday.
