AFC Wimbledon have confirmed striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

Akinfenwa had interest from other League Two clubs and from some League One teams, but it was thought the big man was heading to America to play in the MLS.

The 33-year-old scored 15 goals in 52 appearances last season after joining from Gillingham.

Speaking about the deal, Akinfenwa said: "I think I have to apologise for making the fans wait for me to sign.

"I had to take a few things into consideration, but in my heart of hearts I always thought this was where I would end up.

Talking about the speculation, the big man added: "I met with a couple of clubs in America and there was also interest from League One and League Two," he added.

"You can only feel blessed that there are people interested in your services, but my heart has always been with AFC Wimbledon."

Dons manager Neil Ardley was delighted with the news, saying: "Bayo mentioned that he was going to America and he wanted to have a look at that, but he said if he came back here then he would sign for us.

"He has been true to his word and I did not expect anything less from him."
