Scunthorpe United have signed striker Darius Henderson on a one-year-deal. Henderson, 33, spent last season at Leyton Orient where he scored eight goals in 23 games.

He has a major pedigree in the Football League having joined his tenth club. Since starting his career at Reading in 2000 from Doncaster Rovers' academy, he has played for Brighton, Gillingham, Swindon, Watford, Sheffield United, Millwall, Nottingham Forest and Leyton Orient.

His most productive season in front of goal came in 2011-12 when he scored 15 goals in 31 games for Millwall in the Championship.

Plenty of attacking options next year

He comes into a competitive environment at Scunthorpe with a whole array of strikers for manager Mark Robbins to choose from. The Iron now have Luke Williams, Paddy Madden, Kevin Van Veen, Tom Hopper and  Henderson as their striking options.

He should be a second-choice behind Luke Williams and Paddy Madden, the latter has made a good start to pre-season with four goals in the first two games.

His move puts Scunthorpe into double figures in terms of new signings this summer. He joins Stephen Dawson, Scott Wiseman, Jack King, Charlie Goode, Isaac Assenso, Scott Laird, Tom Hopper, Luke Williams and Jamie Ness in a summer where the Iron are showing serious intent.

Henderson has his say on the upcoming campaign

Speaking to the club's website, Henderson said: "I think you can see from the outside alone that Scunthorpe are having a go this season."

He suggested there "may be a transition", due to "the number of players that have come into the club". The veteran forward concluded, "We just need to gel as quickly as possible and get off to a good start."

Henderson could make his debut this evening when Scunthorpe look to continue their excellent pre-season at home to Bolton Wanderers. The Iron have already beaten Gainsborough Trinity and Hartlepool United, scoring an impressive seven goals and conceding none.
