Christian Benteke and Shey Ojo managed a goal each as Liverpool overcame Swindon Town in a 2-1 victory to round off an unbeaten pre-season campaign.

Benteke opened the scoring in the 48th minute, pulling down a ball from the air and firing a powerful volley into the top corner.

Mark Cooper's home side equalised not long later, as Jonathan Obika curled in a well-taken effort past Adam Bogdan, but Ojo's late effort - with a little bit of luck - proved enough to give them the win.

The Reds added further problems to Brendan Rodgers, as the Northern Irishman now faces the impossible task of selecting his preferred XI, ahead of Liverpool's opening encounter against Stoke City next weekend following a strong performance.

Impressive displays from Alberto Moreno, Mamadou Sakho, Lucas Leiva, Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke to add to the impressive outings of Joe Gomez, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Jordon Ibe on Saturday in Finland.

Rodgers uses strong team in final game

The Reds named a strong side for their final game of pre-season, just hours after Rodgers oversaw an impressive 2-0 win in Finland. With just a week to go until Stoke entertain Liverpool in their Premier League curtain-raiser, it was important for the full squad to get as many minutes as possible.

Adam Bogdan played behind the likes of Moreno and Sakho, who will both feature heavily this season. Veteran Kolo Toure added a weight of experience while wearing the captains arm band, as he played alongside 16 year old debutant, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Emre Can started in midfield, moving up from his familiar defensive role, with Joe Allen and Lucas filling the voids in the 4-3-3 formation. But after 13 minutes, Allen was forced off with injury, which saw the promising Joao Carlos Teixeira replace the Welshman. With that change in mind, Rodgers switched to a 4-2-3-1, with the young Portuguese star pushing out to the left hand side and debutant Firmino in the centre.

£32.5 million signing Benteke made his debut, with one eye on making his competitive bow next week against Stoke, while the Belgian was flanked by fellow Firmino, and Lazar Markovic.

Swindon, meanwhile, played three Liverpool players in the exciting encounter, with on-loan duo Jordan Williams and Kevin Stewart both playing, while Lawrence Vigouroux was on trial for the home team with the young keeper set to sign for the League One outfit on loan.

Reds the better side early on

Liverpool began the game in their controlling manner, with the Reds playing a crisp and quick style of play. It wasn’t long before the Premier League team had the first real chance of the game, with Brazilian Firmino charging away to leave himself one-on-one with Vigouroux, only to go stumbling over without the reward of the referee pointing to the spot.

Frustratingly, Allen went off injured early in the game which meant tactical changes - as Firmino switched into a more familiar number 10 role, just behind Benteke.

Can was a standout performer in the first-half with many of his driving powerful runs leading to chances for the attackers, but it wasn’t enough to break the stalemate, as the two sides went into the break at 0-0 after nothing more than half-chances, with Markovic and Benteke guilty of wasting the Reds' best opportunities.

Game improves after Benteke breaks the deadlock

Half-time came and went, but much had changed with Liverpool upping their attacking emphasis, and the decision made by Rodgers proved to be a success, withBenteke striking a venomous volley into the  top corner, following a delicate chip into his chest by Teixeira.

The new Belgian was off the mark and the confidence was flowing following his fine goal from outside the box. The former Aston Villa man however missed the target from less than five yards after Markovic pulled the ball back to him, but his cross was ever so slightly behind him.

After the hour mark, Daniel Cleary replaced young Alexander-Arnold, who is heavily fancied as one of the most promising Academy players by first-team coach Pep Lijnders, and was called up to train with the first team nearly two years ago, when the Liverpool born defender made his move to Melwood.

The scores were soon level with former Spurs player Jon Obika, who had a habit of scoring goals against Liverpool at Academy level, rounding off a great move by Swindon - slotting the ball into the corner following patient build up play by Brendan Rodgers' son, Anton.

Youthful-looking Reds nick the win

Ryan Kent and Sheyi Ojo both replaced the £60 million duo of Benteke and Firmino and the youngsters were quick to make an energetic impact, with the Englishman making a number of lightning-quick breaks.

The game soon died out with a number of subs on both sides, with the tempo cooling - however there was still time for the visitors to grab a late winner, with Ojo excellently controlling a long through ball before powerfully striking a shot from the edge of the box, which deceived the keeper to round pre-season off with a win.

Youngsters such as Fulton and Chirivella equipped themselves brilliantly in the final minutes, but the man of the match award went to Liverpool keeper, Lawrence Vigouroux, playing in between the sticks for Swindon - though it was another good work-out as the Reds finished their pre-season just seven days before they open their league season.
