Manchester City defeated Chelsea in their second match of the season due to goals from Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, and Fernandinho. City dominated throughout the game, and Chelsea were unable to break through City's defence and manage a single goal in an exciting second match.

First half

Manchester City pressured Chelsea right away, with Raheem Sterling making dangerous runs down the side and tormenting Branislav Ivanovic, and Aguero taking repeated shots on goal.

Although Chelsea did not impress defensively, their new goalkeeper Asmir Begovic did well to stop some of the shots in the first half, but eventually, one of Aguero's strikes saw the back of the net after taking a couple of touches to get around three defenders.

Kompany and Fernandinho were both booked for fouls on Diego Costa, who was clearly upset about the elbow he had gotten from the latter and had to be separated from Fernandinho at halftime.

Chelsea could not manage to make any solid attempts on goal, and Manchester City clearly looked better in the first half.

Second half

Kurt Zouma replaced John Terry at the half, and Chelsea came back on the pitch looking more put together. Ramires tapped the ball past Joe Hart in the 50th minute, but the flag was up for offside.

Juan Cuadrado came on for Ramires and Nasri came on for Jesus Navas as the Blues looked to change the game and City looked to extend their lead. Chelsea had a chance, but Eden Hazard's shot went straight to the goalkeeper, and instead, Kompany extended City's lead by another goal in the 79th minute with an excellent header off of a David Silva cross.

Fernandinho sealed the game in the 84th minute with a one-touch goal that blew past Begovic to the bottom left corner. The Blues were unable to manage a single goal against the dominant Manchester City side on Sunday, and the final score remained 3-0.

Press conference

Kompany, who scored City's second goal, said after the match,

“The difference was we managed to punish them this time – we didn’t make the mistakes we made in previous seasons against them. It was a comfortable game, mainly because we did everything right.

“I’m very happy with the two clean sheets so far. If I can contribute up front then great but the clean sheet is what makes me sleep well at night.”

Manuel Pellegrini added, "Two things are the most pleasing: scoring three goals and keeping another clean sheet."

Man of the match Aguero also spoke, saying, “The first goal is always important as it allowed the team to be calm.

"It was important to win because Chelsea are a difficult team, the last champions, but I don't think the five point gap is that significant at this stage," he went on, warning fans not to look too far into this victory.

Jose Mourinho, though unhappy, was optimistic about Chelsea's second-half performance, claiming, "They were the best team in the first half. In the second half everything changed and we were the best team," despite Chelsea conceding two second-half goals and being able to convert only one chance, which turned out to be offside.

He went on to say that Pellegrini made defensive substitutions in the second half because Chelsea was threatening to equalise, and that, "The 3-0 is completely fake, out of context. If Hazard scores it's 1-1 and they're in trouble. The second and third are player mistakes."

As for his halftime substitution of Terry, Mourinho said,

"He didn't have an injury. Zouma is our fastest defender. I knew City were going to play on the counter.

"I cannot tell you he [Terry] was dancing in the dressing room, neither did he react badly.

"John Terry is a player who has my total trust, there's no doubt about it."

What this means for Chelsea

Manchester City was definitely the better team throughout this match, and as Chelsea have only earned one point so far, the Blues should certainly be looking to improve and bring in as many points as they can in the weeks to come to bridge the gap.

Problems remain in Chelsea's defensive third and attacking third, and these weaknesses will need to be addressed if the Blues want to come back from this loss.

However, as Aguero pointed out, with 36 games left in the season, a five point lead is not much at this stage, and the Blues can still climb their way to the top with difficulty.
