Gary Bowyer's Blackburn Rovers play host to Russell Slade's Cardiff City in the first batch of midweek Championship fixtures this season. Rovers have started the season poorly with a 2-1 defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers which was followed by a drab 1-1 draw away to Huddersfield Town.

City, meanwhile, are one point better off after they drew 1-1 at home to Fulham but followed that up with an impressive comeback to earn a 2-2 draw away to promotion favourites Queens Park Rangers

Team news

Star striker Jordan Rhodes remains a doubt after a niggling ankle injury sustained in pre-season forced him off against Huddersfield Town on Saturday. If Rhodes is sidelined they will look to their goalscorer from Saturday, Nathan Delfouneso, to deputise.

Former Bluebird Craig Conway and Modou Barrow, currently on a loan spell from Swansea City, are both tipped to start in midfield.

Rovers will wait until as late as possible to make a decision on Rhodes, who will be a key player if they manage to hold on to him.

The big news for Cardiff is that club captain and rumoured West Bromwich Albion target David Marshall is to return to the starting side. Marshall has completed his three-match suspension and will fly north with the rest of the squad on Tuesday morning. He will replace Simon Moore, who in fact had an outstanding game against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday evening.

Kenwyne Jones made a big impact after coming on against Queens Park Rangers but Joe Mason and Alex Revell are expected to start for the third consecutive game.

Recent history

A tight affair is likely to be in store after both fixtures between the two sides last season ended in closely-fought 1-1 draws. The game at Ewood Park was the curtain-raiser for the Championship season as a wonderstrike from the recently-departed Tom Cairney cancelled out an early header from Jones.

The reverse fixture came in February as a late header from Sean Morrison looked enough for three points but ex-City striker Rudy Gestede struck to earn Rovers a point. In Cardiff's promotion campaign three seasons ago, they travelled to Ewood Park and picked up a convincing 4-1 win which was followed by an equally impressive 3-0 win in South Wales.
