Goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley has signed a new contract with Birmingham City Ladies ahead of the 2016 FA Women’s Super League season.

She began her career at the age of seven playing for Weston Colts, a local boy's team. Initially playing outfield, she later switched to goalkeeping, doing so well that she attracted interest of scouts from Derby.

Baggaley, who was impressive during the latter stages of last year's competition, began her career at Derby County’s Centre of Excellence, and in 2013, made the short trip to Birmingham where she joined their academy set-up. The 19-year-old, who made her senior debut against Yeovil Town Ladies in the 2014 FA WSL Continental Cup, progressed through the ranks to the first team, where she became the first choice keeper replacing the then injured and now departed Becky Spencer

The shot stopper has already represented her country at various age groups from U15 through to U20s, including a call up to the England squad for the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship game against Sweden.

Boss and Baggaley pleased with the deal

Blues manager David Parker was delighted to secure Baggaley's signature, saying, “Given Sophie’s performances last season it is a natural transition. Sophie is a top quality modern day keeper, with many qualities to her game, especially her ability on the ball." She added, "Sophie’s progression at the club also remains part of our development philosophy and producing homegrown players.”

Baggaley tweeted, "Thanks to @David27Parker and @BCLFC for the new contract, can't wait for the new season to start now #BCLFC #backthegirls".

More signings

Birmingham City, who finished 8th in the WSL last year, will no doubt be looking to strengthen the squad following the departure of captain Karen Carney and Becky Spencer to Chelsea Ladies, Cristina Torkildsen to Coventry City Ladies and the release of Chelsea Weston.
