Newcastle United frontman Aleksander Mitrovic is wanted by Fenerbahce according to reports in Turkey.

The Serbian international helped United gain promotion back to the Premier League last season, but poor performances saw Mitrovic demoted as Rafael Benítez’ third choice striker behind Dwight Gayle and Daryl Murphy.

The 22-year-old only managed 11 starts last campaign and struggled to make the 18-man matchday squad on numerous occasions. It remains to be seen what role he will have if he stays on at St James’ Park next season.

New recruits to spell the end for Mitro?

United are expected to sign at least one striker ahead of their Premier Legaue return with a season long loan for Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham expected to be sealed in the next few days.

The deal is likely to see the former Anderlecht striker pushed further down the pecking order.

Turkish outlet Sport.Mynet suggest the Turkish giants could offer Mitrovic an escape route, and Newcastle could be tempted to cash in.

The Serbian international has 13 goals in 59 league appearances since joining the Magpies two years ago.

Süper Lig move

The report also suggests that despite the striker’s poor goal return in England, Fenerbahce believe he has “huge potential” and could become a star in the Süper Lig.

Mitrovic still has three years left on his current deal at St James’ Park and it is unlikely Newcastle will accept anything less than the £13million they paid for him in 2015.

The Serbian has shown flashes of what he can do in a black and white shirt, but it remains to be seen whether he is the 20-goal-a-season striker United thought they were getting two years ago.
