After Vincent Kompany announced his retirement from professional football, VAVEL UK Manchester City Editor, Josh Lees takes a look back at five memorable moments from his time on the blue half of Manchester.

5. 2011 FA Cup Semi Final vs Manchester United

With usual club captain, Carlos Tevez ruled out of arguably the Blues' biggest game in 35 years, Kompany stepped up to take the armband, leading his side to a historic 1-0 win over arch rivals, United at Wembley. The Belgian put in a solid performance to keep out Sir Alex Ferguson's side, and proved to manager, Roberto Mancini he was strong club captain material as he was given the armband full-time just two months later.

 4. 2018 Carabao Cup Final vs Arsenal

Once again Kompany proved his class on the Wembley turf, securing his side a third League Cup triumph in five years, after a memorable man-of-the-match performance. Not only did the Belgian prove to be the backbone in the Blues backline, Kompany scored the all-important second goal of the tie in a 3-0 win to put his side out of sight and well on their way to another Wembley triumph.

3. 2014 Final Day Win vs West Ham

After his side's maiden Premier League victory came in dramatic fashion two years prior, once again Kompany's City left it until the final day to secure their second, and the Blues' skipper again played a vital role.

With his side 1-0 ahead just after the restart, the Belgian put 48,000 or so nerves around the Etihad at rest after he netted the second City goal of the game. An hour or so later, Kompany deservedly had his hands on the Premier League trophy for a second time.

2. 2012 Home Derby vs Manchester United

If you have not noticed by now then it is fair to say Kompany has a knack for scoring big goals, however this one is arguably one of the biggest in not just the former captain's career, but across City's 125-year history all together.

After the Blues managed to claw back five points in two games on rivals, United in the 2012 title race the two clubs faced off with just three points between them with three games to go at the Etihad Stadium. Inn arguably the biggest Manchester derby in history a hero was needed, up step Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian's piercing header just before half time, proved to be the only goal of the game to give his side a famous victory. The win gave City the goal difference advantage heading into the final two games of the season and of course the rest is history...

1. 2019 Penultimate game of The Season vs Leicester City

When Sky Sports commentator, and former Manchester United man, Gary Neville read out the famous words 'Where do you want your statue Vincent Kompany?' he could not have been more right.

Once again the Blues found themselves in a nail biting title race, and once again it was Kompany that proved the key man. After 70 nervy minutes in their penultimate game of the season against Leicester, the Belgian found space 30 yards from goal, and despite Sergio Aguero's shouts of 'No Vinnie, No!' the City skipper hit a thunderbolt into Kasper Schmeichel's top corner lifting the roof off a delirious Etihad Stadium.

Little did the City faithful know that this rocket would be their long-serving, captain's final masterstroke in a sky blue shirt making the mesmorising strike all the more magical, as the Belgian bowed out in typical Kompany fashion.
