Sutton United produced a stirring fightback to earn a 2-2 draw with Northampton Town at the Sixfields Stadium.

The Cobblers were in front when Shaun McWilliams picked out Marc Leonard, who fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the area and Mitch Pinnock doubled the lead eight minutes before halftime.

Within two minutes of the restart, the Yellow Army halved the deficit when a cross by Rob Milsom was headed home by Omar Bugiel.

On the hour mark, a mistake by McWilliams led to the tying goal by Donovan Wilson as Sutton extended their unbeaten run to three matches.

Story of the match

Sam Hoskins, Northampton's leading scorer, was back in the side as he was named to the bench. Ryan Haynes and Leonard came in for Ali Koiki and Sam Sherring, both picking up knocks against Stevenage.

Danny Hylton and Ben Fox were suspended while Jonny Maxted missed out for personal reasons and Tyler Magloire and Josh Eppiah were out injured.

Sutton duo Aaron Pierre and Harry Beautyman returned whilst Lewis Ward started in goal for Matt Gray's side.

Following a tame opening 15 minutes, Northampton made the breakthrough as a throw-in by McWilliams Leonard found the bottom corner with a superb low strike from the edge of the area.

The hosts pressed for a second as Louis Appere started the move with Pinnock feeding Jack Sowerby, who saw his effort stopped by Lewis Ward.

Kieron Bowie saw his shot deflected behind by his own teammate and McWilliams went just wide.

It was excellent build-up play by Appere on 37 minutes as he held up the ball and eventually found Pinnock, who took one touch and fired past Ward to double the Cobblers lead.

In first-half stoppage time, the Yellow Army had an excellent chance to cut the lead in half, but Joe Kizzi headed over from close range.

A misplay by McWilliams, who sat on the ball in his own box, then led to Wilson taking the ball from him and firing home to level the score.

Sam Hoskins and Max Dyche came on in a double change by the hosts and Hoskins made an immediate impact, forcing Ward to tip over his cross-shot.

Both teams had a chance to win it at the end and after Aaron McGowan was brought on for Akin Odimayo, Bowie blazed wide and at the other end, Coby Rowe headed over and Kizzi misfired.

Player of the match: Omar Bugiel
