A comfortable 3-0 win over Carlisle United in the FA Cup fourth round saw the Toffees progress once again in a domestic cup competition. The Blues now have more cup wins this season, seven, than they do Premier League wins, six.

They will now make the long trip south to face fellow Premier League team AFC Bournemouth in the next round after they knocked out League Two promotion contenders Portsmouth FC in the FA Cup fourth round.

The tie will take place during the weekend of the 20th of February at Dean Court.

Comfortable cup tie win for the Blues

Everton avoided a potential FA Cup banana skin with a professional performance against Carlisle United where Ross Barkley and Aaron Lennon were the pick of the Blues players.

Arouna Kone opened the scoring after Lennon broke through thanks to a long ball over the defence from the returning James McCarthy. The winger fed Kone who scored a simple tap in after 90 seconds. Lennon then added the second after some wonderful wing play with Bryan Oviedo with Lennon comfortably rolling the ball past the beaten Mark Gillespie in the Carlisle net.

Barkley then finished off the scoring with a long range effort that once again left Gillespie beaten.

Blues boss Roberto Martinez said he was “very pleased” with his sides “great professionalism” and that is already looking forward to the next round.

The win saw Everton to progress to the FA Cup fifth round for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The cup gives the Blues a chance to avenge their Capital One Cup heartbreak and finally end their 21 year hoodoo with silverware at Goodison Park.

More than a cup tie

After the devastating Cumbria floods, Everton fans dug deep and donated over £9,000 pounds to Carlisle United Community Supporters Trust to help with the relief effort.

Carlisle United were able to get the game on at Brunton Park which submerged in water only a couple of days ago. A new pitch surface was laid but that did not trouble the Toffees preferred possession and passing style of attacking play.
