It was nine minutes in when Müller played in Mario Götze who tried to square it to Robert Lewandowski but Marc-Oliver Kempf made a last ditch interception.

In an open first 15 minutes, both sides threatened without really testing either keeper but the visitors were looking dangerous on the counter.

Müller nearly opened the scoring but just toed it wide from 10 yards out. As did Götze after showing great control to take down a wonderful cross-field ball by Xabi Alonso his volley was well saved by Roman Bürki though.

The Bavarians were starting to dominate. Alonso was the next to have a try from distance but his effort was held by Freiburg’s stopper.

Mehdi Benatia had to go off to be replaced by Jerome Boateng, after pulling up with a muscle problem.

The Allianz Arena was celebrating in the 40th minute when Alonso sent another tempting ball into the box for Franck Ribery, who nodded it down for Robben to head home. It was the Dutchman's 100th goal for Munich.

It was a case of holding on for dear life until half time for the away side as Bürki kept the champions out with two fine saves.

The league leaders doubled their lead just three minutes into the second half, Robben chipped the ball to Juan Bernat whose exquisite, improvised effort was tipped onto the crossbar but Müller followed to make it 2-0.

Brazilian Dante nearly got in on the act but his header was clawed away by the Swiss keeper.

Fellow defender Bernat suffered the same fate as his fierce drive was athletically palmed over, seconds later the Spaniard hit the post.

Admir Mehmedi, in a rare foray forward for the guests, went close with a powerful effort.

And that was about it apart from another great save from Bürki, who had an unbelievable game in goal for Die Breisgau.
