A lively start saw Aubameyang head just over after Wolfsburg gave the ball away needlessly before De Bruyne was denied by Mitch Langerak.

The breakthrough came after only eight minutes. Mats Hummels drove forward from the back with the ball, he fed in Immobile who crossed for Aubameyang to slot home.

Hummels then nearly got a goal himself, getting his head on the end of a Ilkay Gündogan costless-kick but his header looped just over.

Eric Durm then brilliantly blocked former Dortmunder Ivan Perisic’s shot to preserve his side’s lead.

Wolfsburg were back in it just under the half hour mark. Sebastian Kehl gave away a costless-kick in a dangerous position and De Bruyne curled the ball past Borussia’s Australian keeper.

Immobile was then denied by Diego Benaglio shortly before Durm did well to bravely block another effort from the visitors.

After the break, the Italian forward chested a cross down only to see his half-volley met by a flying save from the Swiss keeper. Immobile got his goal with 15 minutes left, running at the Wolves’ defence a space opened up for the shot and the former Torino striker lashed the ball into the bottom left corner from 25 yards out.

Dieter Hecking’s side went in search of an equaliser and eventually got it through a thumping header from Brazilian Naldo, seeing his side get a share of the spoils with five minutes remaining on the clock.
