The visitors took the lead less than a minute into the match. Unconvincing defending from Subotic and a weak punch from Roman Weidenfeller saw the ball reach Soto who did well to loop a volley into the empty net.

The hosts nearly drew level immediately as Marco Reus rattled the post and Kapino did well to save from Shinji Kagawa on the rebound. The Mainz stopper then did well to tip Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s shot around the post as Dortmund pushed for an equaliser.

Just before half-time, Reus free-kick was punched clear by Kapino. The ball fell to Kagawa on the edge of the box who drilled just wide.

The home fans were bouncing soon after the break though as Subotic made up for his earlier error and powered home a header. 10 minutes later, things got even better as Reus was put through and he rounded the keeper and slotted it into the back of the net.

Mainz showed great character as they responded ruthlessly, right-back Malli firing into the roof of the net, Weidenfeller did not cover himself in glory again though.

A rampant Borussia re-took the lead when Reus unleashed an incredible through ball with the outside of his foot to Aubameyang, who poked the ball in

Shortly after in the 78th minute,  it was four as the Gabonese striker saw his free-kick parried out to Sahin and the Turk rifled his shot into the open goal. The 95ers only really tested Weidenfeller once after that, as Jürgen Klopp’s side were in complete control.
