The Atlanta Braves won their fifth-straight Saturday night against the New York Mets 5-3. This was supposed to be a rebuilding situation in Atlanta, but the Braves are now 5-0, their best start in over 20 years.

Braves ace Julio Teheran (2-0) was once again effective as he pitched six innings allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits, and walked four batters while striking out five. Teheran cruised through the first six innings, but once he reached the seventh he couldn’t retire any of the five batters he faced before being removed. Dillon Gee (0-1) was roughed up in his first start of the season as he went five innings allowing eight hits, five runs, and struck out only two batters.

Freddie Freeman jumpstarted Atlanta’s offense as he homered in the second inning to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. The Braves would further their lead in the fifth inning as Christian Bethancourt and Andrelton Simmons would hits back-to-back RBI doubles giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning Eric Young Jr. would add an RBI triple and Nick Markakis would hit an RBI single to further the Braves lead to 5-0.

In the top of the seventh inning Teheran would give up a leadoff single to Lucas Duda and then walk the bases loaded. The Mets would score their first run on a fielding error by Braves third baseman Alberto Callaspo. Teheran would be removed the next at-bat after he hit Travis d'Arnaud with a pitch to give the Mets their second run of the inning. New York would score their third and final run of the inning after Wilmer Flores would ground into a double play to score Daniel Murphy.

Braves relief pitcher Jim Johnson recorded his first save of the season as Jason Grilli was not available after a 28-pitch inning Friday night. This is Johnson’s 125th save of his career.

Teheran appeared to injure his right leg when Lucas Duda’s single up the middle glanced off his leg. He would stay in the game but never looked the same, and would eventually be removed after loading the bases and allowing a couple runs.

Atlanta will look to sweep the Mets tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 PM EST as Bartolo Colon (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will face off against Braves left-hander Alex Wood (1-0, 3.60 ERA).
