After suffering another gut wrenching loss in the late innings against the New York Mets on Sunday, the Atlanta Braves (31-33) bounced back on a cold and rainy night in Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox (27-38). The Braves defeated the Red Sox 4-2 in front of a nationally televised audience in the first game of four-game series where both teams will play two of those games on their home field.

This loss brings the Red Sox losing streak to seven games, and now sits nine games out of first place in the American League East standings. Only the Oakland A’s have a worse record in the American League.

Atlanta sent rookie right-hander Williams Perez (3-0, 2.29 ERA) to the mound two days after he earned his first career save in an 11-inning affair against the New York Mets on Saturday. Perez threw six shutout innings where he allowed five hits and struck out two batters. The double-play was Perez’s best friend as he induced three double-plays, one in each of the first three innings.

Rick Porcello (4-7, 5.29 ERA) took the mound for Boston and for the fourth time in his last five starts he gave up at least four runs or more runs. In 6.1 innings Porcello allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out five batters and walking only one.

The Braves broke through offensively in the fourth inning that started with a one-out single by Freddie Freeman. After Freeman stole second base, Nick Markakis came through with an RBI single to left field. Juan Uribe would single to right field and after reaching third base on a tag play, Nick Markakis would score on a wild pitch by Porcello. A.J. Pierzynski would extend the Braves lead to 3-0 with a single to right field that squirted past the first baseman.

Atlanta would add on an additional run in the seventh inning on a bases loaded single to right field by Jace Peterson. However, it was almost a costly run as the bases became loaded after Gold Glove shortstop Andrelton Simmons was hit in the hand on a bunt attempt. Simmons would stay in and finish the game but there was clearly discomfort the rest of the way as he constantly flexed his right hand.

Boston would get on the board in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun by Xander Boagaerts to dead center field. Pablo Sandoval would double to center field putting another runner in scoring position, but Atlanta reliever Nick Masset would get out of the inning unscathed.

Jason Grilli picked up his 17th save of the season, but it wouldn’t happen without a little tension. After picking up two quick outs, Sandoval would record his second two-bagger of the game and Mike Napoli would reach on a rare throwing error by Andrelton Simmons. Mookie Betts would keep Boston alive with an RBI single to center, making it 4-2. But pinch-hitter Alejandro De Aza would ground out to Grilli to end the game.

Before heading back to Atlanta to finish this four-game series, the Braves and Red Sox will play at 4:05 PM EST. RHP Julio Teheran (4-2, 4.78 ERA) will pitch for Atlanta, while LHP Wade Miley (5-6, 5.07 ERA) will pitch for Boston.
