The Houston Astros came into game 162 against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a one game lead in the Wild Card race and either needed a win or an Angels loss to make the postseason. Houston got the latter and that was the news they needed because they couldn't overcome Paul Goldschmidt to beat the D'Backs.

As for this ballgame at Chase Field in Arizona, the Astros never had the lead as the D'Backs kept answering the call.

Lance McCullers got the start for the Astros and turned in a solid outing going five innings giving up just three runs (2 ER) on six hits while striking out six and walking two on 97 pitches.

Robbie Ray got the start for Arizona and couldn't quite make it through five innings as he lasted just 4.1 innings giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking one on 88 pitches.

The Diamondbacks got on the board first in this one as in the first inning, A.J. Pollock hit a solo home run to put his side out in front early on.

The Astros answered back in the third inning on a double by George Springer to score Jose Altuve and tie it up at one a piece.

Then in the fourth, Arizona got a run as Jake Lamb came in to score on a balk by Lance McCullers. That put the D'Backs back out in front.

This back and forth affair continued as in the fifth, Evan Gattis beat out a double play ball to tie the game up at 2-2 when Altuve came in to score again.

The D'Backs answered right back in the fifth when  Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a ground-rule double to score Paul Goldschmidt from second and take a 3-2 lead.

The seventh inning was full of scoring as George Springer came in to score after a wild pitch by Daniel Hudson and that tied it back up at 3-3.

Paul Goldschmidt had the last laugh in this one as he hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give Arizona a 5-3 lead. They didn't let this lead up for the rest of this one.

In the ninth inning, the Astros threatened, but Brad Ziegler shut things down to preserve the 5-3 lead and secure the win.

The Diamondbacks finished third in the NL West with a record of 79-83.

For the Astros, losing this ballgame to the D'Backs had some consequences because with the Yankees lost their game to the Orioles, and an Astros win would have meant they would have hosted the Yankees on Tuesday in the AL Wild Card game. Instead, they will head to New York to face the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
