Rivalry Week in the MLS will kickoff with an eastern Canadian show down when Toronto FC and the Montreal Impact meet for the first time this season in league play, Wednesday evening at BMO Field.

The two sides have met twice this year, both coming in a two-leg semifinal matchup in the Canadian Championship. Montreal took the first game 1-0 at the Stade Saputo, and Toronto won the second game 3-2 in Toronto, with the Impact progressing on away goals.

Both teams are coming into this fixture with different fates and momentum. Toronto had their three-game league winning streak snapped by New York City FC last weekend in a 2-0 loss following a bye week, and Montreal are coming off a big 2-0 victory at home over Orlando City SC.

The bye week certainly looked to have slowed down Toronto’s rise up the Eastern Conference standings. Greg Vanney’s side looked the best they’ve ever been during the club record three-game winning run. An extra week off would have been the last thing they wanted, and it showed when they were shutout for the first time in a league game since March 14th.

Montreal come into this one with a similar resurgence up the league standings to their counterparts. The Impact have won five times in their last seven MLS matches, and have found themselves sitting just two points behind Toronto following a shaky start to the season.

Wednesday’s matchup and Saturday’s game against D.C. United may prove to be pivotal to Toronto’s season, as they will be missing a couple stars the following few games due to commitments to the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Most notably, captain Michael Bradley and star forward Jozy Altidore will team up with the United States for this summer’s tournament.

Ignacio Piatti and Andres Romero will have a big part to play in this one, as the two players will hope to add on to their three-goal tallies and aid their side to victory. Jack McInerney will be another key player for the Impact, a player that has enjoyed playing against TFC.

Quick winger Dominic Oduro will also be hoping to haunt his former side as the Ghanaian makes another visit to his old stomping grounds.

Since coming into the league, the Impact have yet to win in Toronto, losing four times and drawing another four in all competitions at BMO Field.
