Sporting Kansas City have waived Amobi Okugo, a 24-year-old defensive midfielder they acquired from Orlando City FC last summer on July 15th. The American only made 3 MLS appearances and scored no goals last season in his time with the club. Before that he had only made 15 appearances with OCFC, scoring no goals as well.

Okugo started off his career with the Philadelphia Union, making 117 appearances over the course of 4 seasons. Okugo has played for the United States as a youth international at the U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels. Kansas City received Okugo from Orlando and sent Servando Carrasco back in return.

Carrasco is married to United States Women International player Alex Morgan, who also now plays in the same city for the Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Waving Okugo leaves Sporting with 26 roster spots filled and 2 open slots ahead of the Major League Soccer season kicking off next week. SKC only have one more preseason game against the Colorado Rapids, tonight at Tucson, Arizona.

The open places in the squad leaves the opportunity for Sporting to reinforce their striker position. The only true experienced striker on the roster is Dom Dwyer along with 19-year-old Daniel Salloi, who is the 4th homegrown player in the club’s history. Salloi was an exchange student who attended high school in Overland Park, Kansas. He was on loan with the senior team for Ujpest FC last season in his native Hungary after also playing for the club at a youth level from 2011 to 2014.

Kansas City will open up their season March 6th against the Seattle Sounders before their home opener on March 12th against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
